CALLISON CLUTCH IN PHILS' COMEBACK
GW Hit with 2 Outs in 9th

PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 24 (AP) - Johnny Callison's two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the ninth off Warren Spahn gave the Philadelphia Phillies a dramatic 5-4 victory over the Milwaukee Braves in a game the home team needed.  The hit capped a four-RBI game for Callison, who belted a two-run home run--his 26th longball of the season--in the fifth inning.

The Braves scored first, tallying twice in the top of the fourth off Phillies starter Jim Bunning.  Lee Maye led off with a single and Henry Aaron drew a walk, putting runners on first and second.  Eddie Mathews flied to center for the first out but Joe Torre drew a free pass, filling the bases, and Rico Carty delivered the first of a pair of two-run hits on the day with a single to center, scoring Maye and Aaron to give Milwaukee a 2-0 lead.

The Phillies evened the score in the fifth.  Bobby Wine singled to open the inning and moved to second on Bunning's sacrifice.  Adolpho Phillips fanned for the second out but Callison crushed a Wade Blasingame offering over the right field fence to tie the game.

Philadelphia took the lead for the first time in the sixth.  Richie Allen singled and, one out later, moved to third on Vic Power's base hit.  Blasingame then walked Gus Triandos, loading the bases.  Wine followed with a soft roller to short, scoring Allen to put the Phillies on top, 3-2.

It was still a one-run Philadelphia lead in the top of the eighth.  With one out, Torre singled to center off reliever Jack Baldschun.  Carty then followed with his 19th home run of the year, well into the lower grandstand in left field.  Suddenly the Braves were on top again, clinging to a 4-3 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, with that advantage still intact, Warren Spahn was summoned from the bullpen to close out the game for the Braves.  He was greeted by a Triandos single leading off, and the slow-footed catcher was removed for pinch runner Ruben Amaro.  Danny Cater pinch hit for Wine and added a single of his own, putting runners on first and second with none out.  Clay Dalrymple pinch hit for Baldschun and dropped a successful sacrifice bunt down, advancing the tying and winning runs into scoring position.  Tony Gonzalez, who had entered the game for defense earlier, struck out, leaving Callison as the last hope for the Phillies.  On the very first pitch from Spahn, Callison slapped a grounder through the right side for a hit.  Amaro scored easily and Cater beat the throw from Aaron, ending the game with Philadelphia on top.

The victory moves the Phillies to within 2 1/2 games of the first place San Francisco Giants.
