STING OF LOST NO-HITTER EASED BY HORLEN'S 20TH 'W'
White Sox Pull to Within 4 Games of First
LOS ANGELES, Sept. 23 (AP) - Joe Horlen's bid for a no-hitter ended with one out
in the ninth inning, but he still managed to record his 12th complete game and
his fifth shutout as the Chicago White Sox defeated the Los Angeles Angels, 2-0,
at Chavez Ravine. Horlen's one-hitter was the 14th of this season in the
major leagues. The White Sox are now in a virtual tie for second place
with the New York Yankees, four games behind the league-leading Baltimore
Orioles.
The White Sox did all of their damage offensively in the first two
innings. In the first, Ron Hansen singled with two outs and moved to third
on Pete Ward's base hit. Jeoff Long drew a free pass from Angels starter
George Brunet to load the bases and Ken Berry's infield hit scored Hansen with
the game's first run. Al Weis lined out to first to end the inning.
In the second, Jerry McNertney led off with a single to left and advanced to
second on Horlen's sacrifice. A ground ball moved the runner to third and
Floyd Robinson's roller to the left side went for an infield single, scoring
McNertney with what prove to be the contest's final tally.
Horlen walked Lou Clinton to open the bottom of the second inning, but erased
the baserunner one out later when he induced a double play ball off the bat of
Felix Torres.
After the Clinton free pass, Horlen set down 16 consecutive Angels batters
before walking Jim Fregosi with two outs in the seventh. Tom Satriano also
drew a base on balls from Horlen, with two outs in the eighth, but was stranded
on first base.
In the ninth inning, Horlen fanned pinch hitter Paul Schaal for the first out
but then fell behind Jimmy Piersall 2-0. Piersall lined the next pitch
into right-center field. Robinson made a drive for the ball but came up
empty and the no-hitter was a thing of the past. Horlen proceeded to fall
behind Ed Kirkpatrick 2-0 as well, but this time the third pitch of the sequence
had a very different result. Kirkpatrick rolled over a sinker and the
result was a game-ending 4-6-3 double play.
The victory was Horlen's 20th, making him the first American League pitcher to
reach the mark this year. With a 20-2 record and league-leading 1.44
earned run average with less than two weeks to go in the season, Horlen is
widely regarded as the frontrunner for the AL Cy Young Award.
