HELD'S HR IN 22ND SALVAGES DH SPLIT FOR TRIBE
Yanks Scoreless in Last 13 Innings
CLEVELAND, Sept. 23 (AP) - Woodie Held's two-out solo home run in the bottom of
the 22nd inning ended a nearly six-hour marathon as the Cleveland Indians earned
a split of their doubleheader with the New York Yankees at Municipal
Stadium. The Yankees won the opener, 5-2.
The Yankees opened the scoring in the nightcap on Hector Lopez's bases loaded
sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning. Cleveland came back with two
runs in the bottom of the opening frame, when Fred Whitfield doubled with two
outs and jogged home on Leon Wagner's 32nd home run of the year.
New York tied the game in the second inning on an unearned run when Clete Boyer
reached with one out on an error by third baseman Max Alvis, moved to second on
Rollie Sheldon's sacrifice and scored when Phil Linz doubled.
The Indians regained the lead in the third when Terry Francona doubled and
scored on Whitfield's two-out RBI single. Solo home runs by Vic Davalillo
and Billy Moran in the fourth upped the Cleveland lead to 5-2.
The Yankees chipped away, scoring a single run in the sixth--on Clete Boyer's
10th home run of the year--and another in the eighth on Joe Pepitone's triple
and Boyer's RBI ground out.
New York trailed 5-4 entering the ninth, but rallied. Facing left-hander
Tommy John, Elston Howard started the inning by reaching on shortstop Dick
Howser's miscue and was removed for pinch runner Roger Repoz. Hector Lopez
looped a single to left, putting runners on first and second. Tom Tresh
dropped down a sacrifice bunt, advancing Repoz to third and Lopez to
second. Pepitone then doubled to right, scoring both runners, and giving
New York a 6-5 lead. John escaped further damage, but the Indians now
trailed in the game for the first time since the game's initial inning.
In the bottom of the ninth, with reliever Steve Hamilton on the mound, George
Banks hit a one-out solo home run to tie the game at six.
From that point on, the Yankees had almost no truly good scoring opportunities
for the duration of the contest, and never advanced another runner past second
base. New York's best scoring chance probably came in the 12th, when Bobby
Richardson began the inning with a double off reliever Ted Abernathy, but Pedro
Gonzalez couldn't get a bunt down and eventually struck out and pinch hitter
Archie Moore fanned as well. Lopez walked, but Tresh popped to short to
end the frame. After stranding 15 baserunners in the first 12 innings, the
Yankees left only three runners on base over the final 10 frames.
Hal Reniff and Don McMahon came on for the Yankees and Indians respectively and
both threw eight shutout innings. The eight inning stints are the longest
by a relief pitcher in the major leagues this season.
Cleveland appeared to have the game won in the bottom of the 21st. Facing
Pedro Ramos, in his second inning of relief, Whitfield dropped a single into
shallow left field that Lopez misplayed for an error, allowing Whitfield to
reach second. Wagner was walked intentionally and Vern Fuller, pinch
hitting for McMahon, struck out. Davalillo then hit a tailor made double
play ball to shortstop Linz who booted the ball, filling the bases with one out. The Yankees pulled the infield in and, on a 1-2 pitch, John Romano
grounded sharply right to Linz who redeemed himself by starting a 6-2-3 double
play to send the game into a 22nd inning.
After Lee Stange set the Yankees down in order in the top of the frame, Ramos
retired the first two batters he faced before serving up the 0-1 pitch that Held
deposited over the left field fence for his 16th home run of the season to
finally end the game.
The 22-inning affair is the longest in the major leagues this season. The
previous high was 18 innings, in a 6-4 Braves victory over the Dodgers at County
Stadium in Milwaukee on April 24.
