DRYSDALE, DODGERS OUTLAST CUBS IN 14 INNINGS, 1-0
Game's Lone Run Scores on Passed Ball
CHICAGO, Sept. 22 (AP) - Don Drysdale allowed only three singles in 13 shutout
innings--and it wasn't quite enough. In a game that epitomized the
pitching-dominant play of this baseball season, the Los Angeles Dodgers broke a
scoreless deadlock by tallying a run on two errors and a passed ball in the top
of the 14th and went on to defeat the Chicago Cubs, 1-0, at Wrigley Field.
In fact, the Dodgers scored the game's only run without a single batter reaching
base safely in the inning.
Drysdale (24-9), widely regarded as the frontrunner for the National League Cy
Young Award, was absolutely brilliant, and remained in the game just long enough
to be credited with the win--despite not recording a complete game. He
allowed only three hits, walked two batters (one intentionally) and struck out
14, en route to the win. Ron Perranoski tossed a perfect inning to close
things out.
The Dodgers rank ninth in the NL in runs scored this season, and this game
reflected their offensive struggles. Despite tallying six baserunners in
the first 2 1/3 innings off Cubs starter Lew Burdette, they were unable to
score; the Cubs turned a double play in each of the game's first three innings,
and ultimately recorded a fourth, in the top of the 13th. Burdette had an
impressive performance of his own, working 11 shutout innings before giving way
to a pinch hitter.
Drysdale turned in his most impressive performance of the year in a season full
of tremendous outings. After yielding a lead-off single to Ron Campbell in
the third inning, Drysdale retired 22 Cubs in a row before Billy Williams
finally reached on a one-out single in the 10th. The Dodgers right-hander
responded by striking out Ron Santo and, after Williams stole second to put the
potential winning run in scoring position, fanned Ernie Banks to end the threat.
The Cubs had their best scoring opportunity of the day in the bottom of the
11th. Len Gabrielson led off with the team's first--and, as it turned out,
only unintentional--walk of the game. Campbell dropped down a successful
sacrifice, advancing Gabrielson to second. Pinch hitter Doug Clemens flied
to shallow right field for the second out. It was at this point that Burdette
was lifted for a pinch hitter, John Boccabella. Drysdale worked carefully
to Boccabella, fell behind him, and ultimately issued an intentional walk.
Jimmy Stewart then struck out to end the inning. Stewart became the first
of five straight strikeout victims for Drysdale, stretching all the way into the
13th inning.
After fanning Banks to lead off the bottom of the 13th, Gabrielson flied to
left. Campbell then singled through the box but pinch hitter Vic Roznovsky
flied to right to end the inning.
In the top of the 14th, Drysdale was due to lead off, but it had already been
determined that he'd be lifted for a pinch hitter if the game didn't end in the
13th. Facing Lindy McDaniel, now in his third inning of relief, Frank
Howard hit for Drysdale and flied out. Maury Wills struck out, but Darrell
Griffith's grounder to short was kicked by Andre Rodgers for an error, keeping
the inning alive. On the very first pitch to Willie Davis, Griffith stole
second base and Roznovsky's throw was wild, allowing Griffith to advance to
third. The count moved to 1-2 and then Roznovsky mishandled a McDaniel
breaking pitch. The passed ball allowed Griffith to score, giving Los
Angeles the lead, 1-0. Davis flied out on the very next offering, so the
Dodgers scored their run on an error, a stolen base plus a throwing error and a
passed ball.
Ron Perranoski and a host of defensive replacements for the Dodgers greeted the
Cubs in the bottom of the 14th and the Cubs went down meekly in their final at
bat, cementing the loss. The two teams combined for only 12 hits--all of
them singles--in 14 innings.
