PHILS BLOW 6-RUN LEAD, REBOUND TO BEAT REDS
Herrnstein Belts 2 HRs Including GW; Cincy Lead 1/2
G
PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 21 (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies built a seemingly safe
six-run lead only to lose all of it in one inning, but bounced back on John
Herrnstein's second home run of the game to defeat the Cincinnati Reds, 8-7, in
a wild affair at Connie Mack Stadium. Coupled with San Francisco's
dramatic late-inning win at Houston, the Reds' lead has eroded to 1/2 game over
the Giants. The Phillies, and the idle St. Louis Cardinals, are in a
virtual tie for third place, 2 1/2 games back in the race for the National
League pennant.
The Phillies conceded a first inning lead to the Reds. Pete Rose led off
the game with a base on balls from Philadelphia starter John Mahaffey, was
sacrificed to second by Chico Ruiz, moved to third on Vada Pinson's infield
roller and scored the game's first run on Frank Robinson's single over the head
of second baseman Tony Taylor.
But Philadelphia roared back to tie the game in the second when Clay Dalrymple
tripled off the right-center field wall with two outs and scored on Taylor's
base hit. The Phillies then took the lead for the first time in the third
inning when Mahaffey aided his own cause with a lead-off single, moved to third
on a Tony Gonzalez double into the right field corner and scored on Richie
Allen's sacrifice fly to center.
The Phillies appeared to blow the game open in the fifth inning, chasing Reds
starter John Tsitouris in the process. Gonzalez lined an infield single
off Tsitouris' glove to open the frame and scored when Allen tripled over the
head of center fielder Pinson, making it 3-1 Philadelphia. Billy McCool
replaced Tsitouris, but Johnny Callison upped the lead to three runs when he
greeted McCool with a single to right, plating Allen. A wild pitch moved
Callison to second base and he advanced to third on pinch hitter Vic Power's
ground out. Herrnstein then belted his first home run of the day, off the
light stanchion beyond the right field wall, putting the Phillies on top, 6-1.
The game appeared to be all but over when the Philadelphia lead became 7-1 in
the sixth. With one out, Mahaffey doubled off Bill Henry and moved to
third when a Gonzalez fly ball drove Robinson to the wall in left field for the
second out. The Reds walked Allen intentionally to face Callison,
but the strategy fell apart when shortstop Leo Cardenas booted the resulting
ground ball for an error, allowing Mahaffey to score.
Mahaffey worked ahead of Pinson 0-2 before hitting him with a pitch and Robinson
reached on an infield single, putting runners at first and second.
Phillies manager Gene Mauch replaced Mahaffey with Jack Baldschun, but things
fell apart. Baldschun walked Deron Johnson on four pitches to load the
bases and Johnny Edwards reached on the second infield hit of the inning,
scoring Pinson and cutting the Philadelphia lead to 7-2. Marty Keough hit
into a fielder's choice, scoring Robinson and moving Johnson to third.
Cardenas then doubled past Allen, into the left field corner, scoring Johnson to
make it 7-4 and advancing Keough to third. Mel Queen came on as a pinch
hitter and Baldschun was lifted for Chris Short. Cincinnati countered with
another pinch hitter, Don Pavletich, who grounded out to second, scoring Keough
and moving Cardenas to third. Pete Rose then drilled a 1-0 pitch from
Short into the left field grandstand, shocking the crowd of nearly 22,000 into
silence and tying the game at seven.
Sammy Ellis came on for the Reds in the bottom of the seventh, fell behind
Herrnstein 2-0 and fired a fastball that Herrnstein promptly deposited over the
right field fence and onto 20th Street, bringing the crowd to its feet and
giving the Phillies the lead, 8-7. They threatened for more in the seventh
and again in the eighth, stranding four runners combined, but came up empty.
Ed Roebuck came on to pitch for the Phillies in the eighth and retired the Reds
in order. In the ninth, he walked Keough with one out but set down
Cardenas and pinch hitter Tony Perez to preserve the victory.
