4-RUN 9TH PUSHES PHILS PAST DRYSDALE, DODGERS
Would-Be Shutout Disappears in Final Frame

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 17 (AP) - Left for dead and seemingly headed for their sixth loss in seven games, the Philadelphia Phillies scored four times in the ninth inning to defeat Don Drysdale and the Los Angeles Dodgers, 4-3.  The win moves the Phillies into sole possession of third place in the National League, 3 1/2 games behind the pace setting Cincinnati Reds.  Drysdale appeared headed for his major league leading 12th shutout of the year prior to the Philadelphia rally, but the collapse was swift and fatal.

The Dodgers took the lead in the very first inning off Phillies starter Rick Wise when Maury Wills led off with a double into the right field corner, advanced to third on Wes Parker's sacrifice, and scored on Darrel Griffith's roller to third.

Los Angeles upped its advantage in the fourth inning.  Tommy Davis led off with a double and scored on Johnny Roseboro's single to center field.  The Dodgers then scored what appeared to be a capping insurance run in the eighth inning.  Facing lefty Dennis Bennett, Parker started things off with a single, then moved to second on Griffith's sacrifice bunt.  Right-hander Jack Baldschun replaced Bennett and retired Davis on a grounder to short, but Roseboro came through again, this time with a double, plating Parker and giving the Dodgers a 3-0 lead.

Through eight innings Drysdale had been nearly flawless, allowing only four baserunners (a walk, a hit batsman and two singles), none of whom advanced past second base.  But the ninth inning was a very different story.  Richie Allen was retired on a line drive to first baseman Ron Fairly to open the frame, but Johnny Callison singled and advanced to second when Wes Covington walked.  A passed ball charged to Roseboro moved the runners to second and third, and John Herrnstein drew a free pass to load the bases.  Clay Dalyrymple then bounced a single that bisected Wills and third baseman Jim Gilliam and found its way into left field, scoring Callison to end the shutout.  The lead was now 3-1 and the bases remained filled.  Cookie Rojas followed with an infield chopper that was so high that Wills had no play anywhere.  Covington scored and now the Los Angeles lead was down to a single run, with the bases still loaded.  Bobby Wine lifted a sacrifice fly to right, and Herrnstein crossed the plate with the tying run.  There were two outs now, but pinch hitter Costen Shockley completed the rally with a single to right-center field.  Dalyrymple scored easily from second and the Phillies took a 4-3 lead.  Jim Brewer replaced Drysdale and retired Tony Gonzalez on a comebacker to finally end the inning, but the damage had been done.

Ed Roebuck took the mound for the Phillies in the bottom of the ninth and surrendered a two-out double to Wills to give the Dodgers hope, but retired Parker on a line drive to short to end the game.
