PURKEY'S 1-HIT EFFORT JUST ENOUGH
3 Solo HRs Reds' Entire Offense
CHICAGO, Sept. 15 (AP) -- Reds right-hander Bob Purkey tossed a complete game
one-hitter and, on the strength of three Cincinnati solo home runs, defeated the
Chicago Cubs, 3-1, before a sparse gathering at Wrigley Field. Cubs
starter Larry Jackson (17-14) allowed only three hits--the three solo
homers--but was the hard luck loser. The win moves the Reds 2 1/2 games in
front of both St. Louis and San Francisco in the hotly contested National
League. The Cardinals have a doubleheader against the Braves in Milwaukee
and the Giants host the Mets. The outcome of those games was unavailable
at press time.
Marty Keough provided Purkey with the only run he would need with a two-out solo
home run in the third inning. Frank Robinson's leadoff blast in the fourth
doubled the Cincinnati lead.
Purkey held the Cubs without a hit until the fifth when Len Gabrielson led off
with a double into the right-center field gap and advanced to third on Andre
Rodgers' ground out. Vic Roznovsky walked, putting runners at first and
second, but Jackson popped up for the second out of the inning. Purkey
then lost the strike zone entirely, walking Joey Amalfitano to fill the bases
and Ellis Burton to force in a run. With the potential go ahead runs in
scoring position, Purkey regrouped and struck out Billy Williams to end the
uprising with the Reds on top, 2-1.
That score held up until the top of the ninth when Vada Pinson lined a Jackson
fastball into the fourth row of the right field bleachers. The solo shot--his 17th of the season--came with one
out and provided Cincinnati with a two-run advantage.
After Purkey walked Burton in the fifth inning to break the shutout, he returned
to his efficient, dominant self, retiring the final 13 Chicago batters he faced
to conclude the game.
The combined total of four hits by the two teams ties the low mark for a single
game in the NL this season. The Cardinals and Dodgers combined for only
four safeties in a 1-0 Los Angeles victory at Dodger Stadium on August 16.
The major low for combined hits in a single game this year was set by the Angels
and Yankees who tallied only two hits between them in New York's 1-0 win at
Yankee Stadium on June 30. Al Downing of the Yankees and Fred Newman of
the Angels both fired complete game one-hitters in that contest.
