BERTAINA FIRES SEASON'S 4TH NO-HITTER
O's Win 5th Straight, 10th in Last 11

BALTIMORE, Sept. 12 (AP) - Making just his third start of the season, Baltimore Orioles left-hander Frank Bertaina tossed the fourth no-hitter in the major leagues this season, blanking the Kansas City Athletics, 3-0, at Memorial Stadium.  It as the fifth consecutive victory for the Orioles and the team's 10th win in its last 11 games.

Bertaina struggled with his control throughout, walking six batters and hitting another, but struck out eight en route to the no-hit performance.  There were no close calls during the game.  While the Orioles played solid defense, no outstanding plays were necessary to preserve the no-hitter.

Bertaina walked his fifth batter--Wayne Causey--leading off the top of the sixth in a scoreless game, but Rocky Colavito erased the baserunner by rolling into a 5-4-3 double play.  The double play grounder was the first of nine straight retired by Bertaina.  Colavito was the final Kansas City baserunner, drawing a base on balls with one out in the ninth, but Bertaina retired Ken Harrelson and Doc Edwards on fly balls to end the game and preserve the no-hitter.

The Orioles broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth.  Sam Bowens drew a two-out walk off A's starter Bob Meyer, and then scored when Bob Johnson roped a double off the left field wall.  It was the only run the Orioles would need, but not the last they would score.

Baltimore tallied some insurance in the seventh with another two-out rally.  Jackie Brandt started things off with a double to left and moved to third on a sharp single to right off the bat of Luis Aparicio.  Boog Powell's double to the right-center field gap plated both baserunners, extending the Orioles' lead to 3-0.

Bertaina becomes the third American League hurler this season to throw a no-hitter.  Al Downing of the New York Yankees turned the trick on May 3 against the Washington Senators.  Juan Pizarro of the Chicago White Sox no-hit the Yankees on August 11.  Bob Veale of the Pittsburgh Pirates is the only National Leaguer to toss a no-hitter this season, accomplishing the feat against Houston on September 4.
