STALLARD DROPS 20TH GAME
Dodgers Squeeze Past Mets

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 11 (AP) -- New York Mets right-hander Tracy Stallard became the first National League pitcher this season to lose 20 games, as the Dodgers scored three times in the third inning and held on for a 3-2 home field victory.  Larry Miller worked seven innings, allowing two runs, to earn the victory for Los Angeles.  Bob Miller mopped up for the Dodgers.

With the game scoreless in the bottom of the third, the Dodgers broke through.  Nate Oliver led off with a single and advanced to second on Larry Miller's sacrifice.  Maury Wills followed by reaching on an infield single, leaving runners at first and third.  Jim Gilliam then doubled into the left-center field gap, scoring both Oliver and Wills and putting the Dodgers ahead, 2-0.  Willie Davis then grounded a single into right field, scoring Gilliam and giving Los Angeles on top 3-0.

The Mets tried to rally.  In the sixth, Rod Kanehl led off with a walk.  One out later, Bobby Klaus lined a double to right-center and Kanehl scored on the play when second baseman Oliver's throw to third was wild, cutting the Dodgers lead to 3-1.

In the seventh, New York drew closer.  Jim Hickman tripled to lead off the frame and Charlie Smith's grounder to second plated Hickman, drawing the Mets to within one run.

The Mets put a runner on base in each of the final two innings, but couldn't advance anyone past first base.

Stallard is the second major league pitcher to accrue 20 losses.  Orlando Pena of the Kansas City Athletics lost for the 20th time in a September 7 game at home against Baltimore.
