PIZARRO NARROWLY MISSES 2ND NO-HITTER
Mincher's PH HR in 9th Spoils Effort
BLOOMINGTON, Minn., Sept. 9 (AP) - Juan Pizzaro took a no-hitter into the ninth
inning before surrendering a lead-off pinch hit home run to Don Mincher and
settled for a complete game one-hitter as the Chicago White Sox defeated the
Minnesota Twins, 7-1, at Metropolitan Stadium. Pizarro already has one of
the three no-hitters in the major leagues this year, having accomplished the
feat on August 11 against New York at Yankee Stadium.
Pizarro helped his own cause by belting a three-run home run in the second
inning, giving the White Sox a lead they would never surrender. It was
Pizarro's fourth longball of the season.
Chicago added a single run in the fifth on Floyd Robinson's home run and another
solo tally in the sixth on Ron Hansen's RBI single. The White Sox finished
their scoring with two runs in the ninth on Pete Ward's double.
Pizarro (15-10) retired the first 12 Twins he faced before surrendering
back-to-back walks to Harmon Killebrew and Bob Allison to open the fifth
inning. He escaped trouble by retiring Jimmie Hall, Earl Battey and Frank
Kostro in order. That started a second string of 12 consecutive batters
retired, which took him through the eighth. That led to the Mincher home
run.
The victory leaves the White Sox in third place, four games behind the
league-leading Baltimore Orioles.
