MAYS' BLAST COMPLETES GIANTS' 12TH INNING RALLY
S.F. Ends 3-Game 'L' Streak with Improbable
Comeback
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 9 (AP) - Willie Mays hit a three-run home run with two outs
in the bottom of the 12th inning, capping a four-run frame, as the San Francisco
Giants beat the Los Angeles Dodgers, 6-3, at Candlestick Park. The win
snaps a three-game losing streak for the Giants who remain in fourth place,
three games behind Cincinnati, in the crowded National League pennant race.
Neither team's starter--Don Drysdale for the Dodgers, Bob Hendley for the
Giants--figured in the decision, but both pitched well. The game was
scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when San Francisco took the lead.
Mays drew a lead-off walk and was forced at second on Jim Ray Hart's fielder's
choice grounder, but Orlando Cepeda's ground-rule double put runners on first
and third with one out. Hal Lanier's grounder to short plated Hart and put
the Giants on top, 1-0.
Cepeda's two-out solo home run--his 31st long ball of the year--down the left
field line extended the Giants' lead to 2-0.
The Dodgers finally got on the scoreboard in the seventh. Tommy Davis
opened the inning by reaching first on Hart's error and, after Frank Howard
fouled out, advanced to third on Johnny Roseboro's single to right. Ron
Herbel replaced Hendley on the mound and retired Wes Parker on a ground ball to
short, but Davis scored on the play, halving the San Francisco lead.
Los Angeles drew even in the top of the eighth against reliever Bob Shaw.
Wally Moon pinch hit for Drysdale but was retired on a line drive to center
field. With one out, Maury Wills doubled past Cepeda at first. Dick
Tracewski grounded to Cepeda, with Shaw covering first base, moving Wills to
third with two outs. Willie Davis was walked intentionally to set up the
platoon advantage but Tommy Davis foiled the strategy by grounding a single
through the middle, scoring Wills to tie the game at two.
The Giants had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the ninth. Hart
reached when second baseman Junior Gilliam booted his ground ball for an
error. Cepeda then drew a walk, putting runners at first and second with
no outs. But Lanier's sacrifice attempt failed and he ultimately struck
out. Duke Snider hit for Del Crandall and grounded out weakly to second,
with both runners moving up 90 feet. Willie McCovey then hit for Jose
Pagan and ended the inning with a ground ball to short.
The Dodgers finally broke through in the top of the 12th. Roseboro led off
with a single and advanced to second on Parker's sacrifice. Gilliam then
laced a single to right-center, scoring Roseboro ahead of Harvey Kuenn's throw
to give Los Angeles a 3-2 lead.
Ron Perranoski came on for the Dodgers in relief of Bob Miller--who had thrown
four scoreless innings of relief himself--to start the bottom of the 12th and
immediately yielded a single to Tom Haller, Crandall's replacement behind the
plate. Jim Davenport successfully sacrificed Haller into scoring
position. Pinch hitter Cap Peterson grounded to short, with Haller taking
third, leaving San Francisco with just one out to play with. With the
Giants out of right-handed hitters on the bench, Los Angeles manager Walt Alston
had the southpaw Perranoski walk Kuenn--the potential winning run--intentionally
to face the lefty swinging Matty Alou, and the move blew up in his face when
Alou lined a single to center field, scoring Haller with the tying run.
Perranoski was ordered to pitch carefully to Mays, the major leagues' leading
home run hitter and the count moved to 3-1. The 3-1 pitch was low and out
of the strike zone but Mays golfed it over the left field fence for his 49th
home run of the year and a 6-3 victory for the Giants.
