CHISOX EARN SPLIT ON TALBOT'S 1-HITTER
Ward Cracks 4 Homers, 3 In 16-Inning Opener Loss
WASHINGTON, Sept. 7 (AP) - After suffering the loss in a 16-inning doubleheader
opening game, Fred Talbot helped the Chicago White Sox salvage a split by
tossing a one-hitter in the nightcap over the Washington Senators at D.C.
Stadium. Talbot, the sixth pitcher utilized by the White Sox in the
opening game, was working in his fourth inning of relief in game one--despite
being the scheduled starter for the second contest--when Ed Brinkman singled
past a drawn-in infield, scoring Earl Cunningham from third base with the
winning run in the bottom of the 16th to give the Senators a 7-6 victory.
Nevertheless, Talbot not only started the nightcap, he took a no-hitter two outs
into the eighth inning. Mike Brumley's infield single broke up the no-hit
bid but Talbot retired the final four Washington batters to complete the game in
Chicago's 8-0 win.
Pete Ward had a huge day offensively for the White Sox, belting three home runs
in the opener and four on the day. In game one, Ward was 5-for-8 including
a double and five runs batted in. In the nightcap he was 1-for-3 with a
walk and his solo home run was his fourth of the day and 30th of the season.
In the opener, the White Sox scored twice in the first inning on Ward's two-run
home run but Mike Brumley's first home run of the season--a two-run shot--tied
the game for the Senators in the bottom of the second. Washington seemed
to seize control of the game, and drove Chicago starter Ray Herbert from the
mound in the fifth. Chuck Hinton's solo home run in the fourth gave
Washington the lead and Brumley's second two-run home run of the game put the
Senators on top 5-2 in the fifth. Brumley had been held without a home run
all year prior to this game.
The White Sox rallied, however, on Ward's two-run homer in the sixth, which cut
the Washington lead to 5-4 and brought an end to the day for Senators starter
Bennie Daniels. In the seventh, Ward cracked his third home run of the
contest, which came with Don Buford on first, off reliever Jim Hannan and the
White Sox were back on top, 6-5.
The lead was short-lived. In the bottom of the seventh, the Senators tied
the game off reliever Eddie Fisher when Hinton's sacrifice fly scored Dick
Phillips with the tying run.
From there, no one scored until the 16th, though both clubs had their
opportunities. The best failed chance came in the top of the 16th
inning. Facing reliever Jim Duckworth, Talbot drew a lead-off walk and
moved to second when Tom McCraw was hit by a pitch. Buford's sacrifice
attempt was so good that it went for a base hit and the White Sox had the bases
loaded and no one out with the heart of the order due up. But Floyd
Robinson bounced back to the hill which Duckworth turned into a force at the
plate and Ward's chopper over the mound was turned into a 6-3 double play by
Brinkman. The failure to score would cost the White Sox dearly.
In the bottom of the 16th, Phillips grounded a single into left to open the
inning. Brumley popped to third for the first out, but John Kennedy laced
a double into the left field corner, chasing Brumley to third. The White
Sox drew the infield in but Brinkman ended the marathon by slashing a single to
right field.
The nightcap didn't have the back-and-forth drama of the opener, but Talbot's
no-hit bid provided plenty of interest. McCraw's fourth home run of the
season came with J.C. Martin on base in the third and provided the White Sox
with all the runs they would need but Chicago scored single runs in the fourth,
fifth and eighth innings--the last of those on Ward's fourth home run of the
day. The deal was sealed for good when the White Sox plated three unearned
runs in the eighth.
The big story, however, was Talbot who issued a walk to Don Blasingame in the
first inning and Kennedy in the third but was otherwise flawless. After
the second base on balls, Talbot retired 16 consecutive batters until
surrendering Brumley's chopper to the right side in the eight which ultimately
died on the grass for an infield single. Undaunted, the White Sox starter
struck out Kennedy to end the inning and retired Washington in order in the
ninth to complete the game.
Talbot's effort represented his first shutout this season and the second one-hit
complete game by a White Sox starter this season; Juan Pizarro turned the trick
on August 11 against the Yankees. It's the sixth one-hit complete game by
an American Leaguer this year.
Ward's three-home run game in the opener was the fifth time a major league
player had accomplished the feat this season--all of them since August 4.
Tony Oliva of the Twins (August 9 vs. Cleveland) is the only other American
League player to homer three times in a single game.
