CHANCE LOSES NO-HITTER, SHUTOUT, GAME WITH 2 OUTS IN 9TH
Yaz's 2B Plates Schilling With Game's Only Run
LOS ANGELES, Sept. 7 (AP) - Dean Chance took a no-hitter two outs into the ninth
inning, only to lose it--along with the shutout and the game--as the Boston Red
Sox defeated the Los Angeles Angels, 1-0, in the first game of a doubleheader at
Chavez Ravine. Red Sox starter Dave Morehead tossed a three-hit shutout
and was the beneficiary as his teammates rallied to score the game's only run.
Chance held the Red Sox without a hit for 8-2/3 innings, but surrendered a pair
of walks and also had to deal with a pair of baserunners who reached on
errors. With two outs in the top of the second inning, Tony Horton and
Eddie Bressoud reached on consecutive miscues by Jim Fregosi and Bobby Knoop
respectively, but Chance pitched out of trouble by retiring Bob Tillman on a
ground ball.
The only other Boston baserunner prior to the ninth came in the fourth inning
when Lee Thomas drew a one-out walk, but he was thrown out trying to steal
second base.
Morehead, meanwhile, was holding the Angels scoreless. Lou Clinton drew a
one-out walk in the bottom of the second inning and stole second, but was left
stranded. Fregosi led off the fourth with a single and stole second with
two outs, preceding a walk to Clinton, but Bob Rodgers rolled back to the mound
to end the inning. Los Angeles also put two runners on with two outs in
the sixth but Rodgers struck out to end the threat.
In the top of the ninth, Chance retired Morehead on a fly to center but then
walked Chuck Schilling. Felix Mantilla struck out but Carl Yastrzemski
then a double down the left field line and into the corner. Schilling came
around to score and the relay throw by Fregosi was airmailed over the head of
Rodgers allowing Yastrzemski to move to third. Chance induced Thomas to
roll to first to end the inning but the Red Sox now had the lead.
In the bottom of the inning, Morehead never gave the Angels an opportunity to
rally, striking out the side. He ended the game by fanning Vic Power for
his 12th strikeout of the contest--a team and personal best.
