9TH INNING HRs ALLOW PHILS TO SNATCH VICTORY FROM JAWS OF DEFEAT
Johnson, Triandos Hit Game-Tying, Winning Shots

PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 4 (AP) - Alex Johnson and Gus Triandos hit back-to-back home runs with two outs and the bases empty in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Philadelphia Phillies pulled out an improbable come-from-behind victory over the San Francisco Giants, 2-1, at Connie Mack Stadium.  The home runs made a loser of Dick Estelle in his season's debut for the Giants, spoiling what had been a brilliant start.

Estelle was working on a three-hit shutout into the ninth inning and retired Richie Allen on a fly to center and Frank Thomas on a foul pop to first in the game's final frame.  Estelle then worked ahead of Johnson 1-2 but hung a breaking ball that was deposited in the bleachers in left-center field.  That tied the game and brought Triandos to the plate and the Phillies catcher launched a 3-1 pitch into the lower grandstand in straight away left field to complete the comeback.

The Giants took a 1-0 off Philadelphia starter Art Mahaffey in the top of the second on Jim Ray Hart's lead-off home run.  Both pitchers were extremely stingy with baserunners.  Mahaffey held the Giants to five hits and two walks through eight innings before being lifted for a pinch hitter.  Estelle surrendered just three hits and a pair of free passes prior to facing Johnson in the ninth inning.

The late-inning fireworks made a winner of Phillies reliever Jack Baldschun (6-7) who worked a perfect top of the ninth inning.

The loss leaves San Francisco two game behind St. Louis, pending the outcome of the Cardinals' game with the Cubs.  With the win, the Phillies have pulled to within 2 1/2 games of first place.
