MALONEY FANS 14 AS REDS NIP CUBS
Reds in 1st Place Tie Pending Cards Outcome
CINCINNATI, Sept. 1 (AP) - The Cincinnati Reds are among the half of the teams
in the National League engaged in a tooth-and-nail battle for the pennant and
they received a huge boost in their first game of September. Jim Maloney
struck out 14 Chicago Cubs en route to a complete game four-hitter as the Reds
won, 2-1, at Crosley Field. The 14 strikeouts are the most by a Cincinnati
pitcher in a single game this year and is tied for second in all of the major
leagues this season to Sandy Koufax of the Dodgers, who fanned 17 batters in a
Los Angeles victory over St. Louis on June 12. Jim Kaat of the Minnesota
Twins also struck out 14 in a win over Washington on August 28.
The Reds scored just enough runs off Cubs starter Ernie Broglio to support
Maloney.
The Cubs took the lead in the first inning. Jimmy Stewart led off with a
single but was forced at second on an aggressive play by first baseman Deron
Johnson. Ellis Burton laid down a decent bunt to the right side, but
Johnson charged and fired to second base to retire Stewart. Maloney struck
out Billy Williams, but Burton stole second base and scored when Ron Santo
bounced a single through the middle.
Broglio retired the first 11 Reds he faced but then surrendered Vada Pinson's
14th home run of the year. The towering fly ball landed several rows into
the right field bleachers and tied the game.
In the sixth, back-to-back doubles with one out by Chico Ruiz and Mel Queen put
Cincinnati on top, 2-1.
Maloney was effective in scattering walks and singles through the first five
innings of the game, but after surrendering a lead-off walk to Stewart in the
fifth, he was positively dominant. Stewart was erased on Burton's around
the horn double play grounder and Williams filed to center. In the sixth,
Maloney struck out Santo--his sixth victim--and retired Ernie Banks and Len
Gabrielson on a fly ball and a ground ball respectively. A strikeout of
Ron Campbell in the seventh was sandwiched around a fly ball and a grounder and
in the eighth, Maloney struck out the side--Stewart, Burton and Williams.
The Reds, meanwhile, had done absolutely nothing off reliever Lindy McDaniel,
who replaced Broglio on the mound for Chicago after the Cubs starter was lifted
for a pinch hitter in the top of the seventh.
Maloney walked Santo to start the ninth, ending a string of 11 consecutive
batters retired. But once again, Maloney asserted his dominance, striking
out Banks, Gabrielson and Vic Roznovsky to end the game, marking the second
straight inning that the Cincinnati right-hander had struck out the side.
With the win, the Reds move to within 1/2 game of first place, pending the
outcome of the Cardinals' contest with Milwaukee.
