KREUTZER, McDOWELL LOCK UP IN EPIC DUEL
Nats Best Tribe, 1-0
WASHINGTON, Sept. 1 (AP) - Frank Kreutzer and Sam McDowell displayed a contrast
in styles in one of the best pitcher's duels of the season to date.
Kreutzer, who had pitched horribly for Washington since being acquired in a
trade with the Chicago White Sox, was nearly perfect, allowing just two singles
and no walks while striking out four in a complete game shutout. McDowell
was nicked for one run, but struck out 12 in eight innings, including six in a
row at one point, as the Cleveland Indians fell to the Senators at D.C. Stadium,
1-0.
Washington scored the game's only run in the fourth inning. Don Zimmer
looped a lead-off single to center and moved to second on Willie Kirkland's
sacrifice. John Kennedy then flared a single down the right field line,
scoring Zimmer. McDowell regrouped to fan Mike Brumley and Kreutzer, which
began the string of six consecutive strikeout victims. The mark of six in
a row matches the longest such streak by a pitcher this year, and has been
accomplished a total of four times.
Aside from the lone run, the starting pitchers completely dominated play.
Kreutzer surrendered a two-out single to Bob Chance in the first inning, but he
was thrown out trying to steal. After 10 consecutive Cleveland hitters
were retired, Max Alvis singled with one out in the fifth inning, but he never
advanced past first base. After the Alvis safety, Kreutzer set down the
final 14 batters he faced. In all, the Indians had only 28 plate
appearances in the entire game. It was the second complete game two-hitter
tossed by a Senators pitcher this season; Bernie Narum accomplished the feat on
July 5 in an 11-inning loss at Detroit.
The 12-strikeout performance by McDowell was his third of the season, and
interestingly enough all came in Cleveland losses. In those three games,
McDowell's teammates have scored a grand total of two runs.
Kreutzer entered the contest with an earned run average of 7.85 in five
appearances (four starts) with the Senators, but lowered that mark by more than
2 1/2 runs as a result of the shutout.
