DRYSDALE'S GEM SNAPS DODGERS 'L' STREAK
11th Shutout, 18th CG
ST. LOUIS, Aug. 31 (AP) - Don Drysdale fired a complete game three-hit shutout,
snapping a six-game Los Angeles Dodgers losing streak in a 1-0 victory over the
St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium. It was Drysdale's major league
leading 11th shutout and 18th complete game of the season.
The Dodgers have scored fewer runs than any team in the big leagues this year
and the club's offensive struggles continued, despite the victory. Los
Angeles hasn't scored more than four runs in a single contest since August 15, a
span of 15 games. The Dodgers are 4-11 during this period.
The Dodgers overcame a strong effort by Cardinals starter Mike Cuellar who
allowed just one run in six innings of work, but that was enough for Drysdale.
The game was scoreless until the top of the sixth. Maury Wills led off
with a single and stole his 36th base of the season. Dick Tracewski
followed with a single to left, one of his three hits on the day, and Wills
scored the game's only run.
The Dodgers had opportunities to add on to their lead in both the seventh and
eighth innings, but failed. In the seventh, with runners on first and
third and one out, Drysdale and Wills were retired, stranding the runners.
In the eighth, Tracewski led off with a double and was balked to third by
reliever Ron Taylor, but Willie Davis struck out, Frank Howard rolled to short
against a drawn-in infield with the runner holding third, and Ron Fairly flied
out to right field.
The Cardinals had their best opportunity to break through against Drysdale
(22-7) in the top of the seventh. Lou Brock led off with a single and
immediately stole second. Bill White flied out to deep center, with Brock
taking third. But the Dodgers brought the infield in and Ken Boyer bounced
out to Julian Javier at second base with Brock holding. Dick Groat then
flied to left to end the inning.
The St. Louis loss cuts the team's lead over second place Cincinnati to a single
game heading into September. Five National League teams are within three
games of first place as the season heads into the home stretch.
