HORLEN LOSES FOR 1ST TIME IN 15 DECISIONS
1st 'L' Since May 30
BALTIMORE, Aug. 30 (AP) - Joe Horlen was charged with his first loss in three
months--a span of 18 starts and 15 decisions--as the Chicago White Sox fell,
3-0, to the Baltimore Orioles at Memorial Stadium. Horlen's last loss came
on May 30--his third start of the season--when the White Sox were shut out 2-0
by the Detroit Tigers. Both of Horlen's losses this season have come when
the White Sox have been held scoreless. Horlen's string of wins in 14
consecutive decisions is easily the longest in the major leagues this year.
The loss drops Chicago four games out of first place in the American League,
pending the outcome of first place New York's game at Boston. A loss by
the Yankees would lift the Orioles into a tie atop the league standings.
Horlen (16-2) certainly didn't pitch a bad game, working seven innings and
allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits, but it wasn't good enough.
Baltimore's Robin Roberts (15-5) worked out of several jams before recording his
third shutout of the season.
The Orioles scored the only runs they would need in the second inning.
Brooks Robinson led off with a single to left-center and, one out later,
advanced to third when Earl Robinson doubled into the right field corner.
Sensing that runs would be at a premium, White Sox manager Al Lopez had Horlen
walk Charlie Lau to load the bases. But the strategy was foiled when, on
the first pitch to Jerry Adair, catcher J.C. Martin mishandled a Horlen
fastball. The passed ball allowed Brooks Robinson to score the game's
first run and moved the other runners to second and third. Adair then
singled to left, scoring Earl Robinson and advancing Lau to third. Horlen
avoided further trouble by striking out Roberts and Russ Snyder to end the
inning, but the Orioles led, 2-0.
Using small ball tactics, Baltimore added a run in the sixth. Norm Siebern
drew a lead off walk and advanced to second when Brooks Robinson followed by
laying down his first sacrifice of the year. Sam Bowens then laced a
double into the left-center field gap, scoring Siebern.
Roberts ran into trouble several times early in the game. In the second
inning, Gene Stephens led off with a double and moved to third on Ran Hansen's
sacrifice, but the Orioles brought the infield in and Martin's grounder to
shortstop Luis Aparicio netted the White Sox nothing. Horlen flied to left
to end the inning. In the fifth, Tom McCraw singled with one out and,
after Al Weis flied out, Floyd Robinson walked and the runners advanced to
second and third on Charlie Lau's passed ball, but Roberts retired Pete Ward on
a pop fly to first to extinguish the threat. Roberts went on to retire 13
of the final 14 Chicago batters he faced to end the game.
