MAYS PACES GIANTS TO WIN OVER BRAVES
Hits 16th HR in August
MILWAUKEE, Aug. 29 (AP) - Willie Mays continued his incredible August with a
2-for-4 effort, including a pair of runs scored, two runs batted in and his 47th
home run of the season, as the San Francisco Giants whipped the Milwaukee
Braves, 6-1, on a rain-filled day at County Stadium. It was the 16th home
run in the month of August for Mays, who homered for the third straight
game. Over the course of his last 14 games, dating back to a doubleheader
on August 16, Mays is hitting .434 with 12 home runs and 26 runs batted in.
The Braves fell to .500, at 64-64, marking the first time the club hasn't been
above the break even mark since May 24 when they were 18-18. Milwaukee now
stands in seventh place, 10 games out of the league lead.
The Giants seized control of the game in the very first inning with two runs off
Milwaukee starter Bob Sadowski. Jesus Alou was hit by a pitch leading off
the game and was forced at second by Hal Lanier. Mays followed with a home
run, and San Francisco had a lead it would never relinquish.
That lead doubled in the third inning. Lanier started things off with a
double past first baseman Joe Torre and Mays was intentionally walked.
Willie McCovey's roller to the left side of the infield resulted in a force at
third for the first out of the inning but Jim Ray Hart brought home Mays with a
single. After a fielder's choice produced the second out of the frame, Tom
Haller's base hit plated McCovey to make it 4-0.
The Giants scored twice more in the fifth. With one out, McCovey was hit
with a pitch and, after Hart lined to second, Sadowski plunked Orlando Cepeda,
putting runners at first and second. Haller walked to fill the bases and
Jose Pagan's single to center scored both McCovey and Cepeda to give San
Francisco a 6-0 lead.
A pair of rain delays, totaling more than two hours, interrupted the game and
prematurely ended the day for Giants starter Ron Herbel after five shutout
innings. He was replaced by Billy Pierce who threw the final four innings,
allowing just a single meaningless run in the ninth.
The victory leaves the Giants just one game out of first place in the race for
the National League pennant.
