HORLEN WINS 14TH STRAIGHT DECISION
ChiSox Snap 4-Game Losing Streak
CHICAGO, Aug. 26 (AP) - Joe Horlen won his fourteenth straight decision,
improving to 16-1 on the season and giving the White Sox a much needed 6-2
victory in the process. The win over the Minnesota Twins at Comiskey Park
snapped a four-game Chicago losing streak and is just the second victory for the
team in its last 12 games. The White Sox remain in third place, four games
behind the league-leading Baltimore Orioles who won their fourth consecutive
game by beating Cleveland at home.
The White Sox ran out to a sizable lead early and never looked back. Jim
Landis' two-out third inning triple plated Al Weis, who led off the frame with a
single, to give Chicago a 1-0 lead.
The White Sox seized firm control of the game with a four-run fourth.
Floyd Robinson started things off with a lead-off triple and scored on Moose
Skowron's single to center. Ron Hansen followed with a base hit, putting
runners at first and second and Tom McCraw's sacrifice bunt moved the
baserunners to second and third with one out. Al Weis was retired on a
soft line drive to second and J.C. Martin was walked intentionally to bring
Horlen to the plate. But the Chicago starter foiled the strategy with a
double to left-center field, clearing the bases to make the score 5-0.
Horlen took a no-hitter into the sixth inning but yielded a lead-off single to
pinch hitter Jerry Kindall. The shutout was lost in the seventh.
The Twins tried to get back in the game, but settled for single tallies in the
seventh and eighth inning. Horlen got one of those runs back in the bottom
of the eighth, driving home his third run of the ball game with a sacrifice fly
that plated Hansen.
Eddie Fisher mopped up for the White Sox with a pair of scoreless innings.
