MAYS BELTS 3 HRS, GIANTS BURY DODGERS
SF CF's Torrid August Continues

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 24 (AP) - Willie Mays hit three home runs and drove in six while Jim Duffalo tossed his first complete game of the season, leading the San Francisco Giants to a 9-1 thrashing of the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium.  Mays now has 43 home runs on the season and is lapping the field in the National League long ball chase.  Giants teammate Orlando Cepeda is second in the league with 26 home runs.  Boog Powell is the American League leader with 29.

In the process of becoming just the third big leaguer thus far this season to hit three home runs in a game (Willie Stargell of the Pirates and Tony Oliva of the Twins are the others, and all three have accomplished the feat in the month of August), Mays continues his red hot performance of late.  Since August 1, he's posted a batting average of .379 with 12 home runs and 26 runs batted in.  The 12 homers this month match the output of all of his San Francisco teammates combined.  Seven of Mays' home runs have come in his last six games.

The Giants took the lead in this game in the top of the first inning when Cepeda's double, and an error by right fielder Wally Moon, scored Harvey Kuenn, who had led off with a walk, from first base.

The Dodgers knotted the score in the bottom of the frame when Ron Fairly's fielder's choice scored Jim Gilliam from third base.

San Francisco took the lead for good in the third.  Hal Lanier led off with a double to right and Mays followed with his first home run, into the left field pavilion, to give the Giants a 3-1 lead.  Cepeda walked but was forced at second by Jim Ray Hart's fielder's choice grounder.  A single by Jesus Alou moved Hart to third and he scored on Jim Davenport's sacrifice fly to center field to make it 4-1 San Francisco.

Mays led off the fifth inning with home run number two, into the left field seats down the line, to make the score 5-1 and, after consecutive singles by Cepeda, Hart and Alou filled the bases, Los Angeles starter Joe Moeller was lifted in favor of Bob Miller who induced a double play grounder off Davenport's bat, but Cepeda scored the Giants' sixth run of the game.

San Francisco capped the scoring in the eighth, and of course Mays was involved.  Reliever Jim Brewer hit Duffalo with a pitch leading off the inning and, one out later, he moved to second on Lanier's single.  Mays then launched his third home run of the game.  The three-run shot made it 9-1 in favor of the Giants.

Duffalo, meanwhile, was struggling with his control in just his second start of the season but was successful in keeping the Dodgers off the scoreboard after the first inning.  He ended up walking four, while holding Los Angeles to four hits.
