Braves 3B Belts 3 HRs in Dramatic Win
MILWAUKEE, Aug. 24 (AP) - Eddie Mathews became the second major league player of
the day to hit three home runs in a single game, including a dramatic game-tying
two-run shot in the bottom of the ninth, and Denis Menke ended the game with a
solo shot in the bottom of the tenth as the Milwaukee Braves beat the
Philadelphia Phillies in dramatic fashion by a score of 8-7 at County
Stadium. Willie Mays of San Francisco hit three home runs against Los
Angeles at Dodger Stadium earlier today. Mathews becomes the fourth major
league player this year to hit three home runs in the same contest.
The Braves drew first blood against Phillies starter Art Mahaffey when Henry
Aaron drew a two-out first inning walk and scored on Mathews' first home run of
the game to give Milwaukee a 2-0 lead.
The Phillies pulled even in the top of the fourth when Wes Covington led off
with a single against Braves starter Bob Sadowski and scored on Frank Thomas'
two-run shot into the left field bleachers.
Richie Allen's lead-off home run in the fifth put Philadelphia ahead, 3-2, and
Ruben Amaro's one-out single in the sixth plated Clay Dalrymple to make it
4-2. When Johnny Callison tripled with one out in the seventh and scored
on Covington's ensuing single, the Phillies led 5-2 and seemed to have a
stranglehold on the game.
The Braves began to chip away in their half of the seventh. Gene Oliver
drew a lead-off walk and, one out later, pinch hitter Felipe Alou singled Oliver
to third. Mahaffey was replaced on the mound by left-hander Bobby Shantz,
but pinch hitter Mike de la Hoz ripped a single of his own, driving in Oliver
and sending Alou to second. But Shantz induced a fielder's choice off the
bat of Rico Carty and struck out Lee Maye to end the inning with the Phillies
nursing a 5-3 lead.
After Billy Hoeft worked out of a jam to keep the Phillies scoreless in the top
of the eighth, the Braves went to work in the bottom half. With Jack
Baldschun now on the hill, Aaron rapped out his third hit of the game, a single,
and then rode all the way home on Mathews' mammoth clout over the center field
wall. The Braves third baseman's second home run of the game came on the
first pitch from Baldschun and tied the game at five.
In the top of the ninth, the Phillies took the lead. With Hoeft still on
the mound, Richie Allen lined a lead-off single to left. Callison
sacrificed Allen to second and, one out later, Bobby Wine singled to
left-center, scoring Allen and giving the Phillies a 6-5 lead, with Wine taking
second base on the unsuccessful throw to the plate. That proved important
because Dalrymple blooped a single into shallow left-center field, scoring Wine
and putting Philadelphia ahead by two runs.
Ed Roebuck came on to try to close out the game for the Phillies in the bottom
of the ninth and got Carty on a fly ball to left. Pinch hitter Gary Kolb
drew a walk, but Aaron's fly to center was the second out of the inning.
That brought Mathews to the plate and he worked the count to 2-1 before
depositing a Roebuck pitch into the right field bleachers for his third home run
of the game and a tie contest.
Chi-Chi Olivo came on to pitch for Milwaukee in the top of the tenth and set the
Phillies down in order for the first time since the opening innning of the
game. John Boozer came on to work the bottom of the inning and reached a
full count against Menke who then tied into a fastball and drove it over the
left-center field fence for a game-winning home run.
