GRANT'S 10-INNING SHUTOUT COMPLETES TWINS' DH SWEEP
Tigers Fall 6 1/2 Back of AL Lead
DETROIT, Aug. 23 (AP) - Jim "Mudcat" Grant tossed a 10-inning shutout
and pinch hitter Jimmie Hall drove in Bob Allison with what proved to be the
game-winning run as the Minnesota Twins finished off a doubleheader sweep of the
Detroit Tigers with a 1-0 victory in game two at Tiger Stadium. The Twins
dominated the Tigers in the opener, 14-2, on the strength of an 18-hit
attack. Allison had four hits in game one, including his 23rd home run of
the year, and drove in six runs.
Minnesota scored five runs in the top of the first inning of the opener,
knocking out Detroit starter Mickey Lolich in the process, and eventually led
9-0 before cruising to the blowout victory, making a winner of Twins starter
Camilo Pascual (10-11).
In the nightcap, Grant and Tigers starter Hank Aguirre locked up in a terrific
pitcher's duel that saw Grant retire the first 20 batters he faced before
yielding a two-out single to Al Kaline in the seventh inning. Aguirre was
almost as effective, allowing lone singles to Earl Battey in the third and
Harmon Killebrew in the fourth. Finally, with two outs in the sixth
inning, the Twins put two runners aboard at the same time as Rich Rollins and
Tony Oliva managed consecutive safeties. Rollins was the first baserunner
to reach second base in the game, but was stranded there when Aguirre struck out
Killebrew to end the inning.
The Tigers managed a one-out baserunner in the bottom of the eighth when Norm
Cash singled, but he never advanced past first base. In the top of the
ninth, Oliva singled with one out but eventually was thrown out trying to steal
to end the inning with Allison at the plate.
In the bottom of the same inning, Grant yielded a one-out single to Dick
McAuliffe, but a botched hit-and-run with Jerry Lumpe at the plate saw McAuliffe
thrown out at second base by Battey. That was all the more painful for
Detroit when Lumpe singled; Kaline hit into a fielder's choice to end the
inning.
Aguirre had been lifted for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the ninth and was
replaced on the mound in the top of the 10th by Fred Gladding. Allison led
off by reaching on an infield single--a swinging bunt to the left side of the
infield. Don Mincher struck out but Battey singled through the middle with
Allison aggressively moving to third, just ahead of the throw from center
fielder Don Demeter. Battey was replaced at first base by pinch runner
Jerry Zimmerman and Hall came on to pinch hit for Jerry Kindall. The
Tigers brought third baseman Don Wert in on the grass but left the middle
infielders in double play depth. Hall, however, made infield positioning
moot by lining a single into right-center field, scoring Allison with the game's
first run and chasing Zimmerman to third. Gladding recovered to strike out
Grant, who was allowed to hit for himself, and retire Zoilo Versalles on a fly
to center.
In the bottom of the tenth Grant induced a fly to right off the bat of Gates
Brown and struck out Demeter, but Cash laced a double into the left-center field
gap, bringing the potential winning run to the plate. Al Worthington was
ready in the bullpen but Twins manager Sam Mele stuck with Grant who made the
move pay off by retiring Bill Freehan on a grounder to short to end the game.
Since being acquired by the Twins in a trade with Kansas City, Grant is 6-2 with
a 2.13 earned run average and six complete games in 14 starts, including a pair
of shutouts.
The doubleheader sweep at the hands of Minnesota leaves Detroit on the fringe of
elimination from serious contention for the AL pennant. The Tigers are 6
1/2 games behind the first place Orioles and four behind the third place White
Sox.
