CALLISON'S 2-OUT 3-RUN HR IN 10TH SINKS CUBS
Short Loses No-Hitter in 7th, Shutout in 10th,
Escapes with 'W'
PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 17 (AP) - Johnny Callison's two-out three-run homer in the
bottom of the 10th inning allowed the Philadelphia Phillies to overcome Ron
Santo's home run in the top of the same inning and escape with a dramatic 3-2
victory over the Chicago Cubs at Connie Mack Stadium. The win, coupled
with a loss by the first place St. Louis Cardinals at the hands of the Houston
Colt .45's, allows the Phillies to pull into a virtual tie with Cincinnati for
third place, just two games behind the league leading Cards. Six National
League teams now reside within five games of first place.
Phillies starter Chris Short (13-3) was absolutely brilliant, retiring the first
16 Cubs he faced before issuing a one-out walk to Andre Rogers in the top of the
sixth. The first Chicago hit came one out into the seventh inning when
Billy Williams delivered a single to left field. Those were the only two
baserunners the Cubs managed until the tenth inning.
Meanwhile, Cubs starter Ernie Broglio was nearly as effective as Short,
scattering six hits over the first nine innings of the contest. The
Phillies didn't manage a baserunner past second until the tenth inning.
After nine innings of goose eggs, fireworks erupted in the 10th. Short was
still on the hill in the top of the inning and surrendered a lead-off single to
Williams, just the second Chicago hit of the game. The Cubs left fielder
noticed that Short was paying scant attention to him and promptly stole second
base. Santo then tied into a Short breaking ball and drilled it into the
lower seats in left field, just inside the foul pole, to give Chicago a 2-0
lead. Short retired the next three hitters in order, two of them on
strikes, but the damaged had been done.
It appeared that the Phillies would go down quietly in their half of the
inning. Broglio retired pinch hitter John Briggs on a roller to first
baseman Ernie Banks and induced another pinch hitter, Alex Johnson, to ground
out to short. But Tony Gonzalez drew a two-out walk and Richie Allen
bounced a grounder up the middle that was smothered by second baseman Joey
Amalfitano for an infield hit. That brought the potential winning run to
the plate in the form of the lefty swinging Callison and Broglio was replaced by
southpaw Lee Gregory. With the count 2-1, Gregory came with a fastball and
Callison unloaded on it, depositing the pitch into the right field grandstand,
winning the game for Philadelphia.
