HENDLEY, GIANTS 1-HIT BRAVES, STILL LOSE
Menke's Solo HR Difference in DH Split

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 16 (AP) - Bob Hendley and Bob Shaw combined on a one-hitter, but that single safety was enough as the Milwaukee Braves earned a doubleheader split by slipping past the San Francisco Giants, 1-0, in the nightcap at Candlestick Park.  The Giants easily won the opener, blowing out the Braves, 12-4.

In the second game of the twinbill, Denis Menke drilled his eighteenth home run of the season, a solo shot just inside the left field foul pole, leading off the third inning.  That was Milwaukee's only hit of the game, but it turned out to be enough as Tony Cloninger (14-9) fired a complete game four-hit shutout.

Hendley tossed eight innings allowing the only Braves hit, and walked three (one intentionally) while striking out five.  Bob Shaw threw a single perfect inning of relief after Hendley was lifted for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the eighth.

While Hendley was stifling the Braves, Cloninger held the Giants at bay.  San Francisco put runners on base in each of the first four innings, but after Orlando Cepeda singled with one out in the fourth, Cloninger stiffened considerably, retiring nine consecutive batters before yielding a lead-off base hit to Jim Ray Hart in the eighth.  He then promptly retired the final six Giants he faced, finishing off his team-best 11th complete game and third shutout of the season.
