DRYSDALE 1ST TO 20 WINS
Dodgers Best Cards, Within 6 1/2 of 1st

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 14 (AP) - Don Drysdale became the first pitcher in the major leagues this season to win 20 games, as the Los Angeles Dodgers knocked off the St. Louis Cardinals, 6-4, at Dodger Stadium.  It was the third straight win for the Los Angeles right-hander, and his sixth in seven starts.  Drysdale also leads the major leagues in complete games, shutouts and innings pitched.

It wasn't Drysdale's best-pitched game of the year--not by a long shot.  He struggled through seven innings, but his teammates, who have had troubles scoring runs all season, came through with six runs of support and relievers Bob Miller and Ron Perranoski mopped up with a scoreless inning apiece.

The Dodgers jumped in front with a first-inning run off of Cardinals starter Ray Sadecki when Maury Wills, who led off with a single and a stolen base, scored on Tommy Davis' two-out base hit.

St. Louis matched that run in the second when Dick Groat singled and scored all the way from first base on Tim McCarver's hit-and-run double.

Los Angeles regained the lead in the third with some help from the Cardinals defense.  Wills led off and reached first when Groat kicked his ground ball for an error.  Dick Tracewski laid down a sacrifice bunt but Sadecki added insult to injury by booting it for the second miscue of the inning, leaving runners at first and second.  Willie Davis then dropped down a sacrifice of his own, moving the runners to second and third with one out.  Tommy Davis followed with a single to left, scoring both runners and giving the Dodgers a 3-1 lead.

But the Cardinals came back and tied the game in the fifth when Curt Flood drew a lead-off walk and scored two outs later on Ken Boyer's 25th home run of the season.  Boyer's two runs batted in give him 100 on the season; the St. Louis third baseman is the first major leaguer to reach the century mark.

The Dodgers seized the lead for good in the sixth and knocked out Sadecki in the process.  Frank Howard led off with a single to right and Ron Fairly followed by dropping down a bunt that was so good that it went for a base hit, putting runners on first and second with none out.  Nate Oliver then singled through the box, scoring Howard, with Fairly advancing to third and Oliver to second on the unsuccessful throw to the plate.  Johnny Roseboro lofted a sacrifice fly to deep left, bringing Fairly home and moving Oliver to third.  Drysdale then followed with a single past the drawn-in St. Louis infield, scoring Oliver to put the Dodgers ahead 6-3.  That was it for Sadecki.

Bill White's solo home run in the seventh capped the scoring.  Drysdale was lifted after seven innings, having allowed four runs on nine hits and two walks, but Miller and Perranoski preserved the victory.

Drysdale's quest for the National League Cy Young Award continues apace.  No other NL pitcher has more than 14 victories thus far this season.
