PIZARRO FIRES 10-INNING NO-HITTER, CHISOX COMPLETE DH SWEEP
Sox 'D' Preserves Hitless Effort with Epic 10th Inning Effort

NEW YORK, Aug. 11 (AP) - Juan Pizzaro needed to go the extra mile and did so, with more than a little bit of help from his teammates.  The Chicago White Sox left-hander tossed a 10-inning no-hitter, facing the minimum number of batters, to defeat the New York Yankees, 1-0, in the second game of a doubleheader at Yankee Stadium.  The White Sox won the opener with considerably greater ease, pasting the Yankees, 12-4.  The sweep of the twin bill gives Chicago a season-high 3 1/2 game lead in the American League pennant race.  It was the fourth straight victory for the red hot White Sox and their 10th in the last 11 games.  Since July 17, Chicago has won 21 of 27 contests.

Pizarro (13-6) locked up in a tremendous pitcher's duel with New York starter Jim Bouton, resulting in a scoreless tie through nine innings.  Bouton was nearly as effective as Pizzaro.  The only significant Chicago threat in regulation came in the fourth inning when Pete Ward tripled to the Death Valley region of the Stadium's left-center field.  But Yankees manager Yogi Berra, realizing that runs would be precious in this contest, uncharacteristically ordered his infield to play in to cut off the potential go-ahead run at the plate.  This proved crucial when Moose Skowron followed Ward by grounding to Clete Boyer at third.  Ward had to hold his base as Boyer threw out Skowron at first.  When Gene Stephens flied to left, Bouton had escaped damage.

Pizarro, meanwhile, was mowing the Yankees down, retiring the first 21 batters he faced, but the pressure mounted as the game moved on, and it was manifold.  In addition to working on a perfect game, Pizzaro's teammates had been unable to give him a lead in a game being played amidst a hard-fought pennant race.

After Bouton cruised through a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the eighth, Mickey Mantle led off the bottom half of the frame for New York.  Well aware of the fact that Mantle has been the most productive hitter versus left-handed pitching in the major leagues this year, Pizzaro fell behind the Yankees slugger 3-0 and ultimately walked him on four pitches, losing the perfect game.  But with Elston Howard--another terrorizer of southpaws--at the plate, Mantle was thrown out trying to steal second base by catcher J.C. Martin.  Pizarro retired Howard on a grounder to short and Hector Lopez on a fly ball to right to end the inning.  The walk to Mantle would ultimately prove to be the only thing separating Pizarro from a perfect game.

In the top of the ninth, Don Buford sprayed a single between short and third to open the inning.  Floyd Robinson bounced a hit-and-run ground ball to third, leaving Buford on second with one out.  Ward flied to right field with Buford advancing to third just ahead of the throw from Lopez.  But Mike Hershberger flied out to right field, ending the threat.

In the bottom of the inning, Pizarro got Joe Pepitone on a fly to center field and then fanned Boyer and Bouton to end the inning, keeping the no-hitter intact.

The White Sox finally broke through against Bouton in the top of the 10th.  Stephens drilled an 0-1 Bouton fastball into the seats in right field for his second home run of the year, giving Chicago a 1-0 lead.  Ron Hansen followed by grounding a single into left field and was advanced to second on Martin's sacrifice.  Pizarro then dropped a single into right field, with Hansen stopping at third.  At this point, Berra replaced Bouton with left-hander Whitey Ford, who was making only his second relief appearance of the year, to take on lefty swinging Tom McCraw.  But McCraw beat out a swinging bunt to the right side of the infield, scoring Hansen with the second run of the game and moving Pizarro to second.  Ford retired Buford on a grounder to second, with both runners advancing 90 feet, and then ended the inning by inducing a fly ball to center off the bat of Robinson.

Pizarro finally had a lead and the White Sox also made a defensive move, shifting Buford from second to third base and inserting Al Weis at second, to begin the bottom of the 10th.

Perhaps it was a function of having run the bases in the top of the inning; perhaps it was a result of a longer-than-expected delay before returning to the mound; perhaps it was simply having to work into a tenth inning.  But whatever the explanation, Pizarro was not as sharp when he returned to the hill to face the top of the Yankees' order in the bottom of the 10th inning.  Phil Linz pinch hit for Tony Kubek and, on a 1-0 pitch, laced a drive into the right-center field gap.  The no-hitter appeared to be gone, but center fielder Stephens made a sensational diving catch on the warning track to record the first out of the inning.  Pizarro then got ahead of Bobby Richardson 0-1, but made a mistake with a fastball and Richardson hit a blistering line drive that McCraw caught with a lunging backhanded stab for the second out of the inning.  That brought Tom Tresh to the plate.  Pizarro worked ahead of the Yankees outfielder 1-2 but then hung a breaking ball.  Tresh jumped all over it and hammered it into right field but Hersheberger, moving hard to his right, made a terrific running grab to end the game and preserve the no-hitter.

Pizarro's effort is only the second no-hitter in the major leagues to date this season, and both have come at Yankee Stadium.  Al Downing of the Yankees no-hit the Washington Senators on May 3.

As a team earlier this season, the White Sox had a pair of would-be no-hitters broken up in the seventh inning, one by Gary Peters and one by Joe Horlen.
