CARDS BREAK SCORELESS TIE WITH GIANTS IN 13TH
Herbel, Gibson Duel Deep Into Extras
ST. LOUIS, Aug. 10 (AP) - In what was probably the best-pitched game this season
to date, Carl Warwick's pinch hit sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 13th inning
drove home Dal Maxvill with the only run of the game as the St. Louis Cardinals
tripped the San Francisco Giants, 1-0, at Busch Stadium.
The starting pitchers, Ron Herbel of the Giants and Bob Gibson of the Cardinals,
tossed 10 and 11 innings of shutout ball respectively, but did not figure in the
decision. Neither starter gave the opposing batters much of an opportunity
to score. Herbel held the Cardinals to just three hits--including a
two-out double to Bill White in the sixth inning, the only extra base hit of the
entire contest--and walked three while striking out five. Gibson
surrendered four hits to the Giants, all of them singles, while walking three
and fanning six.
San Francisco had the best opportunity to score in regulation. In the top
of the sixth inning, Hal Lanier led off with a single and was subsequently
forced at second on a grounder by Willie Mays. But Willie McCovey singled
to right field, sending Mays all the way to third. It was the only time in
the game, until the final inning, that a baserunner advanced past second base
with less than two outs. Herbel struck out Orlando Cepeda swinging for the
second out of the inning. Jim Ray Hart then drew a walk to fill the bases,
but Tom Haller grounded to White at first base to end the threat.
In the bottom of the 13th, Tim McCarver led off with a single against Billy
Pierce, who was in his second inning of work. Maxvill was called upon to
pinch run for McCarver, and he moved to second when Pierce botched Mike
Shannon's tapper back to the mound for an error, leaving runners at first and
second. Julian Javier then dropped down a sacrifice bunt, moving the
runners to second and third with one out. Carl Warwick pinch hit for
reliever Ron Taylor and lifted a high fly ball to center. Mays, who had
been drawn in, raced back to make the catch, but was unable to get much on the
throw to the plate and Maxvill scored the winning run.
The game was the longest scoreless affair in the National League this year and
ties the major league high for the season to date. The Cleveland Indians
defeated the Kansas City Athletics 1-0 in 13 innings on April 17.
