BUNNING TOSSES 3RD STRAIGHT SHUTOUT
Phils Extend Winning Streak to 6
PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 9 (AP) - Jim Bunning fired his third straight shutout and the
Philadelphia Phillies won their sixth consecutive game, beating the New York Mets 6-0
before a crowd of 25,662 at Connie Mack Stadium. In the process, Bunning
(13-8) extended his scoreless innings streak to a major league best 30 2/3, 1/3
of an inning longer than the streak that Dean Chance of the Los Angeles Angels
put together in May. It was the seventh victory in eight decisions for
Bunning.
Mets starter Tracy Stallard (5-17) lost his 17th game of the season and suffered
his fifth loss in his last six decisions.
The Phillies took the lead for good in the third inning. Ruben Amaro drew
a lead off walk and advanced to second on Bunning's sacrifice. Tony
Gonzalez reached on an infield hit with Amaro taking third and Richie Allen's
single to right scored Amaro with the first run of the game and advanced
Gonzalez to third. Johnny Callison's grounder to second forced Allen, but
Gonzalez scored the second run of the inning. Callison stole second base
and Wes Covington walked. Clay Dalrymple then singled home Callison to cap
the frame's scoring with the Phillies on top, 3-0.
The lead increased to 5-0 in the fourth. Tony Taylor led off with a triple
and scored one out later on Bunning's double. After an infield grounder,
Allen lined his second hit of the game, plating Bunning in the process.
Philadelphia scored its final run in the seventh. Allen led off with an
infield single, his third hit of the game, moved to second on Callison's
sacrifice and scored on Covington's single to center to make it 6-0.
Bunning, meanwhile, was cruising; the Mets never advanced a runner past second
base. It was New York's fourth consecutive loss.
