PHILS BLANK COLTS FOR 3RD STRAIGHT GAME
Short Fires 2-Hitter
PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 6 (AP) - Chris Short tossed a two-hitter and the Philadelphia
Phillies shut out the Houston Colt .45's for the third straight game, 3-0, at
Connie Mack Stadium. It was the 18th time the Colt .45's have been blanked
this season, most in the major leagues. Only one team, the Washington
Senators, failed to score in four consecutive games this year, and that was back
in early May. The Phillies' third shutout equals the longest streak of
shutouts pitched this year. The New York Yankees also had three straight
shutouts, May 1-3, but the Phillies are the first National League team to manage
the feat this season.
Short and Houston starter Turk Farrell matched zeroes for three innings, but
Philadelphia broke through in the bottom of the fourth. With one out,
Johnny Callison doubled to right-center field and Richie Allen followed with a
two-bagger of his own to virtually the exact same spot, scoring Callison and
giving the Phillies the only run they would need. Wes Covington followed
with a single through the box, scoring Allen to make it 2-0. Farrell
struggled, but still managed to work through the inning without allowing another
run.
The Phillies added a third run in the fifth. Tony Gonzalez began the
inning with a single to center. John Herrnstein and Callison flied out but
Allen worked a walk and Covington came through with another single to center
field, scoring Gonzalez to cap the scoring at 3-0.
Short, meanwhile, was cruising. He retired the first nine batters he faced
before surrendering a walk to Al Spangler leading off the fourth, and then
allowed his first hit of the game, to Nellie Fox, giving the Colt .45's runners
at first and second with none out. But Short came back to strike out Joe
Gaines and escaped trouble by inducing Walt Bond to ground into a 5-4-3 double
play.
After retiring six straight batters, Short walked Farrell with one out in the
sixth, but stranded him at first base, and then retired another eight
consecutive hitters before walking pinch hitter Dave Roberts to open the
ninth. Short rose to the occasion and retired Spangler, Fox and Gaines in
order to end the contest.
