PHILS BLANK COLTS TWICE, RETAIN SPOT IN NL PENNANT MIX
Bunning Wins Opener, 6-1 in Last 7 Starts
PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 5 (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies swept a doubleheader from
Houston, blanking the Colt .45's in both games at Connie Mack Stadium. The
sweep places the Phillies just four games behind National League leading St.
Louis in the crowded Senior Circuit. Six teams are within six games of
first place approximately 2/3 of the way through the season.
In the opener, Jim Bunning continued his recent string of strong outings with a
4-0 victory. The shutout, Bunning's fourth of the season, improved his
record to 6-1 with five complete games in his last seven starts, dating back to
July 11. Bunning lowered his ERA to 2.86, marking the first time he's been
below three since mid-June.
All four of Philadelphia's runs came in the fourth inning. Wes Covington
began the rally with a single up the middle off Houston starter Bob Bruce
(7-11). Bruce then uncharacteristically lost the strike zone, issuing
consecutive walks to Clay Dalrymple, Tony Taylor and Bobby Wine, forcing in a
run in the process and leaving the bases loaded with no outs. Bunning
followed by aiding his own cause, drilling a 2-0 get-me-over fastball into the
left-center field gap and clearing the bases. Bruce worked out of further
trouble, but the damage had been done. The Phillies led 4-0 and Bunning
made it stand up.
In the nightcap, the Phillies pushed a pair of runs across in the third inning
off hard luck Colt .45's starter Ken Johnson. With one out, Wine walked
and moved to second when pitcher Ray Culp dropped down a sacrifice bunt.
Tony Gonzalez was walked intentionally, bringing up light-hitting John
Herrnstein. But the strategy was foiled when Herrnstein laced a double
into the right field corner, scoring both Wine and Gonzalez for a 2-0
lead.
Johnson all but completely shut Philadelphia down from that point on--the
Phillies finished the game with only three hits--retiring 10 of the 11 remaining
batters he faced before being lifted for a pinch hitter in the seventh.
The problem was Culp, who shut Houston down before running into difficulty in
the top of the eighth. He was replaced by Gary Kroll, who recorded the
final five outs of the game to preserve the shutout.
With the doubleheader sweep, the Colt .45's have now been shut out a NL-high 17
times thus far this year.
