HORLEN OUTDUELS OSTEEN IN EXTRA INNING MARATHON
Both Starters Toss 12-Inning CGs in DH Opener
WASHINGTON, Aug. 2 (AP) - Claude Osteen was outstanding, but Joe Horlen was ever
so slightly better as the Chicago White Sox slipped past the Washington
Senators, 1-0 in 12 innings, in the opening game of a doubleheader at D.C.
Stadium. Both pitchers worked the full 12 frames, matching the major
league season high turned in by Jim Bouton of the New York Yankees on May 24.
Both pitchers were superb as the two clubs combined for only eight hits--just
one for extra bases, and neither team had a good scoring opportunity until the
White Sox pushed across the game-winner in the 12th inning.
Horlen carried a no-hitter two outs into the sixth inning before surrendering a
single to Don Blasingame--one of only three Washington hits in the game.
Osteen allowed a base hit to Al Weis, the second batter he faced in the game,
and then a single to Horlen with one out in the third. That hit was
misplayed for an error by Senators right fielder Jim King that allowed Horlen to
reach second. One out later, Horlen moved to third on a passed ball, but
was stranded there when Weis rolled out to first baseman Joe Cunningham.
That was the only time in the entire game that a baserunner reached as far as
third base until Chicago pushed a runner to third with two outs in the ninth
inning in an ultimately fruitless attempt to score.
After allowing the hit to Horlen in the top of the third, Osteen retired 17
consecutive White Sox hitters until Horlen blooped his second hit of the game to
start the top of the ninth. For his part, Horlen retired 17 of the first
18 Washington batters he faced, issuing a base on balls to King with two outs in
the fourth.
In the top of the 12th, Don Buford started off the inning by grounding a double
past third baseman John Kennedy. Pete Ward followed by drawing a
walk. Moose Skowron then grounded to Blasingame at second, but the ball
was hit too slowly for a double play and the Senators settled for a force on
Ward at second base. With runners on first and third and one out, the
Washington infield positioned itself for a possible double play grounder.
Osteen induced a ground ball from Ron Hansen, but the ball was slowly hit and
forced Blasingame far to his left. His only play was at first base and he
retired Nicholson, but Buford scored the first--and ultimately only--run of the
game. Dave Nicholson then grounded out to end the inning.
Horlen (13-1) retired King on a fly to right, but walked Cunningham, bringing
the potential winning run to the plate. But Don Lock flied to center and
Mike Brumley lifted a fly to left that was handled easily by Nicholson to close
out the game.
The shutout is the fourth of the season for Horlen, the American League's ERA
leader; the complete game is his 10th, and sixth in a row, the longest such
streak in the major leagues this season.
