Adcock Homers Twice, Drives in 8; Newman Fires
Shutout
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 8 (AP) - Joe Adcock hit a pair of home runs and drove in a
major league best eight and starter Fred Newman fired a five-hit shutout as the
Angels pounded the Boston Red Sox, 11-0, at Chavez Ravine. Adcock's eight
RBIs best the previous high in the big leagues this year; Orlando Cepeda of the
San Francisco Giants drove in seven runs in an 11-4 victory over the New York
Mets on May 17.
While Adcock was supplying the offense, Newman was cruising to a complete game,
and was never seriously threatened by the Red Sox. The Los Angeles
right-hander has, since mid-June, made nine appearances (eight starts) covering
69 1/3 innings and has allowed only 12 runs (11 earned) for an ERA of 1.43 with
five complete games.
The Angels scored all the runs they would need in the very first inning on
Adcock's two-out, two-run single and then blew the game wide open with six runs
in the third inning, with Adcock again playing a major role. Lenny Green
led off with a single and moved to second when Jim Fregosi drew a base on balls
off Red Sox starter Dave Morehead (6-9). Willie Smith followed with a
single to load the bases, bringing Adcock to the plate. The first baseman
belted a Morehead offering deep over the center field wall for a grand slam,
putting the Angels ahead, 6-0. It was the first grand slam home run by an
Angels hitter this season. When Bob Rodgers and Felix Torres followed with
singles of their own, Jay Ritchie replaced Morehead on the mound and, two outs
later, Albie Pearson's two-run single increased the Los Angeles lead to 8-0.
Smith's solo home run in the fourth increased the Angels' lead to nine and the
scoring was capped in the sixth when Fregosi led off with a walk and, one out
later, scored on Adcock's second home run of the game and 17th of the year.
Newman, meanwhile, was finding very little resistance from the Boston
lineup. The Red Sox only had two baserunners reach as far as second base
in the entire game--Tony Horton singled and moved to second in the second inning
when Eddie Bressoud reached on Newman's error. In the seventh, Bressoud
doubled with two outs, but was stranded.
The victory was the third in a row for the Angels, and their eighth in nine
games. With a record of 50-59, the club moved to within nine games of the
.500 mark for the first time since June 15.
