CARTY HITS FOR CYCLE, BRAVES BURY CUBS
Milwaukee Breaks Open Close Game with 10 Runs in
Final 3 Frames
CHICAGO, July 31 (AP) - Rico Carty had a huge day at the plate, going
five-for-five with five runs batted in and hitting for the cycle as the
Milwaukee Braves rallied late, breaking open a close game, in a 12-2 whipping of
the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. Carty is the first player in the major
leagues to hit for the cycle thus far this season.
The Braves drew first blood in the top of the opening inning when Joe Torre's
bases loaded fielder's choice scored Eddie Mathews, who led off the game by
drawing a walk from Chicago starter Bob Buhl.
The Cubs tied the contest in the fourth, on Ron Santo's 20th home run of the
year, a two-out solo shot that landed in the left field bleachers. Joey
Amalfitano's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the fifth plated Doug Clemens
to give Chicago a 2-1 lead.
But the Braves tied the game in the sixth on Mathews' RBI single and took the
lead for good in the seventh on Felipe Alou's sacrifice fly.
Milwaukee then seized firm control of the game in the eighth. Cubs
reliever Bobby Shantz struck out Woody Woodward, allowed a single to Mathews,
and fanned Lee Maye. With right-handed swinging Henry Aaron due up, Shantz
was lifted in favor of right-hander Freddie Burdette. But Aaron foiled the
strategy with a single to right, sending Woodward to third. Carty then
drilled a three-run homer into the left-center field bleachers, giving the
Braves a 6-2 lead. Joe Torre followed with a home run of his own to push
the lead to five. Felipe Alou drew a base on balls and Denis Menke then
hit the third home run of the inning, to give Milwaukee a 9-2 advantage.
The Braves pushed across three more runs in the ninth on a two-run single by
Carty and a run-scoring base hit off the bat of Torre to account for the final
margin of victory.
Carty walked in the first inning, tripled in the third, singled in the fifth,
doubled in the seventh, homered in the eighth and singled again in the
ninth. Carty is the eighth player this year to accumulate five hits in a
nine-inning game and the first since his teammate, Joe Torre, did it in a
victory over the Dodgers on June 17.
