YANKS POUND 4 1st INNING HOMERS IN NIGHTCAP 'W' OVER
BENGALS
N.Y. Hits Five in Game; Richardson, Maris, Mantle
Go Back-to-Back-to-Back
DETROIT, July 26 (AP) - The Bronx Bombers lived up to their nickname. The
New York Yankees hit five home runs--including four in the first inning--in a
9-4 nightcap victory over Detroit, salvaging a split of a doubleheader played
this afternoon at Tiger Stadium. Bobby Richardson, Roger Maris and Mickey
Mantle hit consecutive long balls in a four-homer first inning that netted the
Yankees five runs. Johnny Blanchard completed the first inning
roundtripper quartet with a solo home run, driving Tigers starter Denny McLain
from the game in the process after just 2/3 of an inning's work.
The Yankees became the second team in the major leagues this year to hit four
home runs in a single inning; the Kansas City Athletics were the other club,
doing so in the sixth inning of an 8-7 loss to Minnesota on May 2.
Richardson, Maris and Mantle are the third trio to hit three consecutive home
runs this season; Willie Stargell, Donn Clendenon and Bob Bailey of Pittsburgh
did it on April 26 in a win over the New York Mets and Dalton Jones, Felix
Mantilla and Carl Yastrzemski of Boston accomplished the feat in a victory over
Cleveland.
After the Yankees surged in front on the strength of their five-run top of the
first, the Tigers nearly matched them in the bottom half. With one out,
George Thomas singled, moved to second on Al Kaline's walk and scored on Don
Demeter's double, with Kaline stopping at third. Gates Brown's single to
center scored both runners and cut the New York lead to 5-3. Bill
Freehan's base hit moved Brown to second before Yankees starter Bud Daley fanned
Dick McAuliffe for the second out. But Jake Wood grounded a single into
right field to score Brown to make it 5-4. Dick Sparma, who had taken over
the mound duties for Detroit when McLain was sent to the showers, finally ended
the inning by flying to Mantle in center field.
The Yankees doubled their lead in the top of the fourth when Tom Tresh's bases
loaded sacrifice fly scored Richardson, making the score 6-4.
The Tigers cut the deficit back to one in the bottom of the fifth, but could
have done much more damage. Daley hit Thomas with a pitch to open the
inning and Kaline doubled off the left field wall, putting runners at second and
third with none out. Demeter then drew a free pass to fill the
bases. Detroit had Daley on the ropes, but he was able to get Brown to
roll into a 4-6-3 double play. Thomas scored the fifth Tigers run but
there were now two outs. Freehan was issued an intentional free pass and
McAuliffe struck out for a second time, ending the frame.
Daley was replaced to open the sixth by Hal Reniff, who proceeded to retire all
12 Detroit batters he faced, extending his scoreless innings streak to 11 in the
process, dating back to July 11.
Meanwhile, the Yankees were extending their lead. Phil Linz led off the
top of the eighth with his first home run of the year to push the New York
advantage to 7-5. In the ninth, Mantle drew a walk leading off the inning
and was replaced on the bases by pinch runner Hector Lopez. Tresh hit into
a fielder's choice, forcing Lopez at second, for the first out, but Joe Pepitone
singled Tresh to second. Blanchard then rapped out his third hit of the
day. The single scored Tresh and moved Pepitone to second; Blanchard gave
way to pinch runner Clete Boyer. Linz then doubled to left, capping the
scoring by driving home Pepitone with the ninth--and final--Yankees run.
