STENHOUSE LOSES NO-HITTER, GAME IN 8TH
O's 4-Run Outburst Dooms Nats
BALTIMORE, July 26 (AP) - Dave Stenhouse carried a no-hitter into the eighth
inning before crumbling, as the Baltimore Orioles rallied for a 4-1 victory over
the Washington Senators at Memorial Stadium. Stenhouse's effort
represented the seventh time this season that a major league pitcher has lost a
no-hitter in the eighth or ninth inning.
The game started out as a pitchers duel. Stenhouse and Orioles starter
Dave McNally matched scoreless frames through the fifth. In the top of the
sixth, the Senators finally broke the deadlock. With one out, Ed Brinkman
beat out a roller to third for an infield hit, aided considerably by the
dampness caused by a light rain that began falling in the fifth inning.
Earl Cunningham followed with a hit-and-run tapper back to the mound for the
second out, with Brinkman advancing to second. Chuck Hinton then grounded
a single into left field and Brinkman just barely beat Boog Powell's throw to
the plate for the game's first run. On the play, Hinton moved up to second
base. That turned out to be a key move because John Kennedy followed with
a line drive single into left field. Again Powell came up throwing to the
plate and this time he nailed the runner for the third out.
The rain picked up as the top of the sixth inning ended and the grounds crew was
called upon to cover the field. The delay lasted for an hour and 14
minutes, but Washington manager Gil Hodges decided to keep Stenhouse in the
game. Baltimore manager Hank Bauer decided that McNally, who had thrown 93
pitches through six innings and seemed to be tiring, was through, and pinch hit
for him in the bottom of the sixth.
But Stenhouse kept rolling right along. He'd retired the first 12 batters
he faced to open the game, before walking Brooks Robinson to lead off the fifth,
then retired the final three hitters prior to the rain delay. After the
delay was over, he retired the first seven Orioles he faced, so with one out in
the eighth, Stenhouse had set down 22 of the 23 batters he'd seen on the day.
But after Stenhouse retired Robinson on a grounder to third, Sam Bowens laced an
0-2 offering into left-center field for a clean single, the first Baltimore hit
of the afternoon. Jerry Adair then hammered the first offering he saw from
the Senators right-hander into the right-center field gap. The ball went
all the way to the wall and Bowens scored to tie the game while Adair pulled up
at second with a double. Dick Brown grounded to second, with Adair taking
third, for the second out of the inning. Bob Johnson then was summoned to
pinch hit for Stu Miller, who had tossed two perfect innings in relief of
McNally, and he looped a ball into shallow left field. Left fielder Hinton
tried to make a shoestring catch but came up short, and the ball shot past
him. Adair scored easily, to give the Orioles a 2-1 lead, and Johnson took
second on Hinton's error. That was it for Stenhouse; Hodges replaced him
with Ron Kline to face Earl Robinson. But Robinson kept the rally going by
grounding a single into center field, scoring Johnson. Robinson stole
second base and scored himself when Luis Aparicio doubled. Kline uncorked
a wild pitch, moving Aparicio to third, but finally ended the inning by retiring
Norm Siebern on a grounder to short. The damage had been done, however,
and the Orioles led, 4-1.
Dick Hall came on to pitch the ninth inning for Baltimore and quickly retired
the Senators in order to end the ball game. Miller (6-3) was credited with
the win.
