PHILS COME OUT ON TOP FOLLOWING WILD 9TH INNING
Winners Belt Three Solo HRs in Final Frame

PHILADELPHIA, July 26 (AP) -  After watching a lead slip away when they surrendered four runs in the top of the ninth inning the Philadelphia Phillies scored three times in the home half, on a trio of solo home runs, to win the second game of a doubleheader with the St. Louis Cardinals, 7-6, at Connie Mack Stadium.  The Phillies also won the opener, 4-3 in ten innings.  The sweep moved Philadelphia to within five games of first place.

The Phillies took the lead in the first inning when Johnny Callison belted his 18th home run of the season.

The Cardinals evened the score in the second.  Ken Boyer and Dick Groat led off with consecutive singles, leaving runners at first and second.  Bob Skinner flied to right for the first out but Tim McCarver drew a walk off Philles starter Art Mahaffey to fill the bases.  Jerry Bucheck followed with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Boyer and tying the game.

Philadelphia took the lead in the sixth with a pair of runs.  Callison started things off with a leadoff double and Richie Allen followed with a triple to left-center, scoring Callison with the go-ahead run.  Alex Johnson added some insurance by lining a single to center, bringing home Allen to put the Phillies on top, 3-1.

St. Louis countered with a run in the seventh when McCarver led off with a double, Bucheck followed with a walk and pitcher Ray Sadecki sacrificed the runners to second and third.  At that point Ed Roebuck replaced Mahaffey on the mound, but Curt Flood laced a single to center field.  McCarver scored easily but Rojas nailed Bucheck at the plate with a perfect throw to catcher Gus Triandos.  Lou Brock grounded out to end the frame.

The Phillies added an insurance run in the eighth.  Facing reliever Ron Taylor, Allen led off by grounding a single through the box.  Johnson followed with a single to center, putting runners on first and second.  John Herrnstein hit for Triandos and laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt, moving the runners to second and third.  Wes Covington pinch hit for Bobby Wine, but was walked intentionally to load the bases for Clay Dalrymple.  Dalrymple flied to shallow right for the second out, with the runners holding.  Tony Gonzalez then pinch hit for Roebuck and drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch to force in a run, to make the score 4-2.  Tony Taylor struck out to end the inning.

Jack Baldschun came on to pitch for Philadelphia in the top of the ninth, nursing a two-run lead, and retired McCarver on a chopper back to the mound for the first out.  Julian Javier hit for Bucheck and promptly lined a double off the left field wall, bringing the potential tying run to the plate in the form of Mike Shannon, who was sent up to pinch hit for Taylor.  Shannon rolled out to short, with Javier taking third.  Baldschun then walked Curt Flood on five pitches, bring the potential go-ahead run to the plate.  Brock drew a walk on a 3-2 offering, filling the bases.  Bill White became the third straight Cardinals batter to draw a free pass, forcing in a run to cut the Phillies lead to 4-3.  Baldschun worked ahead of Boyer, 1-2, but surrendered the game-tying hit when the major league leader in runs batted in singled to right.  The runners all advanced 90 feet.  With Groat at the plate, Baldschun completed the meltdown by uncorking consecutive wild pitches, allowing two more runs to score and giving St. Louis a 6-4 lead before finally ending the inning by retiring Groat on a pop fly to second.

Having gone from one strike away from winning the game to two runs down, the Phillies might have been forgiven if they'd sleepwalked through the home half of the ninth, but that didn't happen.  Facing lefty Mike Cuellar, the bottom of the ninth began much as the top half had when Cookie Rojas rolled to Javier at second for the first out.  But Callison followed with his third extra base hit and second home run of the game, high over the right field wall, to cut the Cardinals lead to a single run.  Cuellar fanned Allen, and the Phillies were down to their final out.  But Ruben Amaro became the unlikely hero, taking a 1-0 Cuellar screwball into the left field seats for his second home run of the season to tie the game at six.  Herrnstein followed and worked the count full before belting a fly ball just inside the right field foul pole for his fourth long ball of the season to win the game for Philadelphia.  What was left of the crowd of better than 25,000 erupted with cheers as Herrnstein rounded the bases and met his teammates at home plate.
