BARBER STEMS TIDE, FIRES 2-HIT CG SHUTOUT
Lefty Helps O's End Skid With Win Over Nats

BALTIMORE, July 25 (AP) - Steve Barber was in the midst of a disappointing season.  He entered his start on July 25 against the Washington Senators with a 2-7 record and an earned run average above four.  To make matters worse, his team, the Baltimore Orioles, had dropped seven of their previous eight games and fallen percentage points behind the New York Yankees in the battle for first place in the American League.  But Barber put together his best start of the year when his team needed it the most, tossing a two-hit complete game shutout in a 3-0 victory at Memorial Stadium.

Barber carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning before surrendering a one-out single to Chuck Hinton.  At that point, the Orioles held a 2-0 lead.

Barber and Senators starter Bernie Daniels matched scoreless frames until the fifth, when Sam Bowens led off with his ninth home run of the year.  The blow cleared the left-center field fence and gave Baltimore a 1-0 advantage.

The Orioles increased their lead to 2-0 in the sixth.  With one out, Norm Siebern doubled into the gap in right-center field.  Daniels walked Boog Powell intentionally but Brooks Robinson laced a double into the left field corner, scoring Siebern and chasing Powell to third.  Daniels avoided further difficulty by retiring Bowens on a shallow fly to right, intentionally walking Charlie Lau to fill the bases, and striking out Jerry Adair to end the inning.

The Senators first hit, off the bat of Hinton with one out in the top of the seventh, at first appeared to be the start of trouble for Barber after he walked Don Lock to put runners on first and second, but John Kennedy rolled into a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat.

The Orioles provided Barber with another insurance run in the bottom of the eighth.  Powell drew a lead off walk from reliever Don Rudolph and was replaced by pinch runner Bob Saverine.  Robinson followed by lining a single to left, with Saverine stopping at second base.  Jim Hannan replaced Rudolph and induced Bowens to fly to center field.  Saverine tagged in an attempt to advance to third and made it safely, and when center fielder Lock's throw scooted past third baseman Chuck Cottier to the retaining wall near the grandstand, Saverine trotted home with the third Baltimore run of the game.

Barber carried a one-hitter into the ninth, but ran into some trouble.  He walked Don Blasingame to open the inning before getting Ed Brinkman on a soft grounder to Aparicio at short, with Blasingame advancing to second.  Earl Cunningham rolled out to Aparicio as well, with the runner holding, for the second out, but Hinton came through again, lining a sharp single to center.  Blasingame advanced to third on the hit and Washington had the tying run coming to the plate in the form of Lock, the club's home run leader.  On a 2-1 pitch, Lock lifted a high fly to deep left field.  Earl Robinson retreated onto the warning track to make the catch and secure the win.

Barber's complete game two-hitter was the second this year by an Orioles hurler (Milt Pappas turned the trick in a July 2 win over the Angels) and the seventh in the American League thus far this season.
