DRYSDALE OUTDUELS BRUCE IN EPIC PITCHING BATTLE
Dodgers Clip Colts, 1-0, In 10 Innings
LOS ANGELES, July 21 (AP) - Don Drysdale tossed a complete game ten-inning
two-hit shutout, besting Bob Bruce and the Houston Colt .45's as Los Angeles
eked out a 1-0 victory at Dodger Stadium. It was the major league leading
16th victory of the year for Drysdale, whose nine shutouts are four more than
anyone else in either league.
Bruce (7-9), the hard luck loser, was almost as brilliant as Drysdale. The
Houston right-hander took a perfect game into the seventh inning before
surrendering a one-out single to left field to Darrell Griffith, after retiring
the first 19 Dodgers he faced. Bruce retired nine more Dodger batters
consecutively following Griffith's single, before finally surrendering the
winning run in the bottom of the 10th.
Drysdale found his own team's defense at least as much of an impediment as the
Houston hitters. The Dodgers committed three errors in the game, but
Drysdale worked around each one.
The Colts had decent scoring chances on several occasions. In the second,
Mike White led off with a single and Bob Lillis' sacrifice attempt was booted by
third baseman Griffith for an error, leaving runners at first and second and
none out. But Eddie Kasko flied out to shallow left, Jerry Grote hit into
a force play at third and Bruce rolled weakly to short to end the inning.
In the eighth, Al Spangler drew a leadoff walk, one of three issued by Drysdale,
and Nellie Fox sacrificed Spangler to second. Joe Gaines flied to the
warning track in left field, with Spangler advancing to third on the play.
It was the first time either team had advanced a runner past second base, but
Walt Bond bounced out to second to extinguish the threat.
The Dodgers finally broke through in the tenth. Griffith led off by lining
to short for the first out, but Willie Davis laced an opposite field
double. Ron Fairly followed by lining a ball into the right-center field
gap, scoring Davis easily and winning the game for Los Angeles.
The Dodgers managed only three baserunners in the entie game, all hits.
The Colt .45s managed just two hits off Dyrsdale, but drew three walks, a hit
batsman, and had three hitters reach on Los Angeles errors and stranded seven.
