AFTER BRUTAL 1ST INNING, PASCUAL RIGHTS SHIP
Twins Counter in Opening Frame, Rally to Win in 8th
BLOOMINGTON, Minn., July 21 (AP) - After surrendering four runs in the top of
the first inning, Camilo Pascual gathered himself and shut the Kansas City
Athletics down for the final eight frames and watched as his Minnesota Twins
teammates rallied late for a 6-4 victory at Metropolitan Stadium. In the
opening inning Pascual (7-9) allowed five hits and a walk; over the final eight,
he held Kansas City to just three singles and a base on balls.
In the top of the first, Pascual struck out the side, but spaced the strikeouts
around a bevy of baserunners. Jose Tartabull opened the game with a double
down the first baseline and Wayne Causey drew a walk. Rocky Colavito then
beat out an infield roller to load the bases. Pascual fanned Jim Gentile
for the first out but Ken Harrelson singled through the box, scoring Tartabull
and Causey to put the A's ahead, 2-0. Billy Bryan went down on strikes for
out number two but Ed Charles continued the rally with a single to center field,
plating Colavito with the third run of the inning. Charlie Shoemaker
followed by bouncing a base hit through the right side of the infield, scoring
Harrelson for a 4-0 Kansas City lead. Pascual struck out his counterpart,
A's pitcher Jose Santiago, to finally end the frame.
The Twins used an A's error to immediately knot the game in the bottom of the
first by scoring four unearned runs. Zoilo Versalles started things off
with a double to the gap in right-center field. Rich Rollins lined a
single to left, moving Versalles to third. Tony Oliva drew a free pass,
filling the bases with none out. Harmon Killebrew then tapped a weak
grounder right back to Santiago, and it appeared that the A's had an easy
home-to-first double play lined up. But Santiago dropped the ball for an
error. Versalles scored and the bases remained loaded. Santiago
struck out Jimmie Hall and induced Bob Allison to ground to third, resulting in
a force play at the plate for the second out of the inning. But the extra
out--or two--that the A's gave the Twins erased the Kansas City lead. Earl
Battey drew a bases loaded walk, forcing in the second run of the inning, and
with Jerry Kindall at the plate, a passed ball scored Killebrew, to make the
score 4-3. When Kindall lined a single to left, Allison came home with the
tying run. Pascual struck out to end the inning, but the game was all
knotted at four.
Both pitchers, miraculously, settled down nicely from that point on.
Neither team put a runner in scoring position again until the top of the
seventh, when Tartabull drew a one-out walk and stole second base on a botched
hit-and-run play. But Pascual retired Causey on a soft grounder to first
and ended the threat by getting Colavito on a fly to center.
The Twins threatened in the home half of the seventh. Rollins roped a
two-out double, bringing the always dangerous Oliva to the plate. A's
manager Mel McGaha summoned left-hander Ted Bowsfield from the bullpen to
replace Santiago and he took care of Oliva on a grounder to third.
Minnesota finally broke the deadlock in the bottom of the eighth. With
Bowsfield still on the hill, Killebrew led off with a single to left. Hall
laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt, advancing Killebrew to second. Allison
was walked intentionally to bring up Battey and the A's brought right-hander Moe
Drabowsky into the contest to face him. Battey beat the strategy by lining
a single to right-center field, scoring Killebrew and moving Allison to
third. Jeff Snyder pinch ran for Battey and Don Mincher was sent up to
pinch hit for Kindall. Mincher lifted a sacrifice fly to center field,
plating Allison and giving the Twins a 6-4 advantage.
Pascual came back for the ninth inning and retired the A's in order to finish
off the complete game victory.
