BOSOX EXTEND W STREAK TO 10
Bressoud's Slam in 8th Ices Game

BOSTON, July 20 (AP) - The Boston Red Sox became the first major league team this season to extend a winning streak to double digits, winning their 10th straight game, 7-1, over the Detroit Tigers at Fenway Park.  Bob Hefner (3-5) made his first start of the season and earned the win with seven innings of four-hit, one-run ball.  Felix Mantilla continued his recent offensive prowess with two more hits, including his 12th home run of the year, and two runs scored.  Mantilla has now hit safely in his last eight games and has a multi-hit streak of four contests.  In his last five games, Mantilla is 12-for-21 (.571) with five home runs, 12 RBIs and nine runs scored.

Hefner and Detroit starter Phil Regan (2-9) matched scoreless frames through the fifth.  The Tigers finally broke the scoreless deadlock in the top of the sixth inning when Regan drew a one-out walk and consecutive singles by Don Wert and George Thomas filled the bases.  Al Kaline then lifted a sacrifice fly to deep right-center field, scoring Regan for a 1-0 Detroit lead.

The Red Sox countered with the tying run in their half of the sixth.  Mantilla led off with a single and moved to second when Tony Conigliaro drew a base on balls.  Carl Yastrzemski rolled into a double play, leaving Mantilla on third with two outs, but, with Dick Stuart at the plate, Regan uncorked a fastball over the head of catcher Mike Roarke.  The wild pitch scored Mantilla and the game was tied.

Boston took the lead for good in the seventh.  Frank Malzone drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on Eddie Bressoud's single to center field.  Bob Tillman then grounded a single through the box, scoring Malzone, but Bressoud was cut down trying to advance from first to third. Pinch hitter Dalton Jones grounded out to end the inning, but the Red Sox led, 2-1.

Boston then blew the game wide open in the eighth against Tigers reliever Larry Sherry.  Mantilla belted a leadoff home run into the screen above the left field wall to increase the lead to 3-1.  Conigliaro followed with his second walk of the game.  Yastrzemski fanned for the first out but Stuart singled to left, moving Conigliaro to second, and then was replaced as the runner at first by Dick Williams.  Lee Thomas then drew a walk, filling the bases.  Malzone lined sharply to Jake Wood at second for out number two, but Bressoud gained a 3-1 advantage in the count and promptly drilled his 13th home run of the season.  The grand slam, over the left field wall, gave the Red Sox a 7-1 lead and was the second Boston grand slam in as many days; Mantilla accomplished the feat in the first game of yesterday's doubleheader against the Senators.

Following a loss in the opener of a doubleheader to the Senators at D.C. Stadium on July 12, the Red Sox had dropped 16 of their previous 21 games and found themselves in the American League basement with a record of 29-55.  Despite being the most unlikely candidate for a long winning streak in the major leagues, Boston now possesses the longest such mark in the big leagues this season.
