PIZARRO EQUALS AL K MARK, CHISOX TRIP A'S IN OPENER
Lefty Fans 13 in 4-Hit CG

CHICAGO, July 19 (AP) - Juan Pizarro tied the American League season high strikeout mark by fanning 13 Kansas City Athletics as the Chicago White Sox overcame an early three-run deficit for a 4-3 victory in the opener of a doubleheader at Comiskey Park.  Pizarro equaled the performances of teammate Joe Horlen and Al Downing of the New York Yankees, both of whom fanned 13 batters earlier this year.  Sandy Koufax of the Los Angeles Dodgers holds the major league season high with 17 strikeouts in a win over St. Louis on June 12.

Pizarro had a difficult start to the game, surrendering three runs to the A's in the very first inning.  After two quick outs, the roof caved in.  Ken Harrelson doubled to the left-center field gap and right-handed slugger Rocky Colavito was walked intentionally to bring up lefty swinging Jim Gentile.  Gentile entered the game hitting less than .100 on the season against left-handed pitching, but drove a 1-2 pitch deep from Pizarro into the lower grandstand in right field for a three-run home run and a 3-0 Kansas City lead.

The White Sox closed to within one run when they finally dented the scoreboard in the fourth inning.  Tom McCraw drew a leadoff walk from A's starter Diego Segui and moved to second when third baseman Ed Charles booted Jim Landis' ground ball for an error.  Ron Hansen rolled out to second, with both runners advancing 90 feet before J.C. Martin lined a single to right, scoring McCraw and Landis to make the score 3-2.

Chicago moved out in front with two more runs in the fifth.  Floyd Robinson sprayed an opposite field single to left with one out and Pete Ward followed with his 18th home run of the season, a towering drive that glanced off the upper deck facade in straight away right field.

Pizarro, meanwhile, was mowing down the Kansas City lineup.  In the third inning he hit Wayne Causey with a pitch, but induced a double play ball and escaped the frame with no damage.  In the fourth, he allowed a leadoff single to Colavito and a one-out safety to Doc Edwards, putting runners on the corners, but he fanned Nelson Matthews and retired Charlie Shoemaker on a ground ball to end the inning.

Segui reached first base leading off the fifth on an error by Ward, but Pizarro (10-5) then ratcheted up his performance to another level, retiring the final 15 batters he faced to end the game.  Nine of those final hitters were set down on strikes, including Colavito, Gentile and Edwards in the sixth.
