DH SWEEP OF NATS EXTENDS BOSOX W STREAK TO 9
Mantilla Goes 7-9, 3 HR, 8 RBIs
BOSTON, July 19 (AP) - The Boston Red Sox remained red hot, sweeping a
doubleheader from the Washington Senators at Fenway Park and extending their
winning streak to nine in the process. The nine-game streak ties the big
league high for the season to date; the Baltimore Orioles won nine in a row in
mid-May.
The Red Sox were paced in both games of the doubleheader by the bat of Felix
Mantilla. In the 12-1 opening game rout, Mantilla was 4-for-5 with a
double, a home run, three runs scored and four driven in. In the 5-3
nightcap victory, Mantilla was 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs and four more
runs batted in.
In game one, the Senators actually took a brief lead in the top of the first
inning when Don Lock reached on third baseman Frank Malzone's bases loaded
error, but Boston starter Dave Morehead pitched out of further trouble.
The Red Sox tied the game in the bottom of the second on Lee Thomas' two-out
solo home run and then blew the game wide open in the third. The nine-run
outburst knocked out Washington starter Claude Osteen and effectively put the
game out of reach. Morehead began the inning with a single, moved to third
on Mantilla's double and scored on Tony Conigliaro's single, with Mantilla
stopping at third. Carl Yastrzemski doubled to center, scoring Mantilla
and chasing Conigliaro to third. Dick Stuart bounced to Osteen, with the
runners holding and Malzone was walked intentionally, filling the bases for the
left-handed swinging Thomas who foiled the strategy with a two-run single,
making the score 5-1. That ended Osteen's day; he was replaced on the
mound by Steve Rizdik, who retired Eddie Bressoud on a shallow fly to right for
the second out. But Bob Tillman singled home Malzone with the fifth run of
the inning and Morehead walked to fill the bases, as the Red Sox batted
around. Mantilla then applied the coup de grace with a grand slam over the
37-foot high left field wall and the screen above it that landed on Lansdowne
Street. That capped the scoring and gave Boston a commanding 10-1 lead.
Conigliaro's two-run home run in the sixth accounted for the final score.
Morehead, meanwhile, shut the Senators down after the first inning, allowing
only the single unearned run en route to his first complete game of the year in
his 20th start. It was only the tenth complete game of the season for the
entire Red Sox staff, the lowest total in the American League.
Boston would add another complete game to that total in the nightcap, behind the
effort of left-hander Arnold Earley. This was a more competitive contest
than the opener and once again Washington drew first blood. Don Lock led
off the top of the second inning with a single and ultimately scored on Dick
Phillips' sacrifice fly.
The Senators extended their lead to 2-0 in the third on Eddie Brinkman's leadoff
home run.
But the Red Sox fought back with a series of single runs. They chopped
Washington's lead in half in the bottom of the third. Russ Nixon led off
by reaching on an error on third baseman Don Zimmer. One out later Dalton
Jones singled Nixon to second and Mantilla followed with a run-scoring base hit
of his own.
Boston tied the game in the fourth. Thomas led off with a single and was
forced at second on Conigliaro's fielder's choice grounder to the mound.
Dick Williams then doubled to right, scoring Conigliaro to make the score 2-2.
In the fifth, the Red Sox finally took the lead, as Mantilla belted his second
home run of the day and ninth of the season.
The Senators tied the game at three with a single run in the top of the
seventh. Ken Hunt led off with a triple into the triangle area in deep
right-center field and then scored when Phillips lifted his second sacrifice fly
of the game to right.
But Boston immediately countered with two runs in their half of the
seventh. Nixon led off the inning with a single and was sacrificed to
second by Earley. Jones flied to deep center, with Nixon tagging and
advancing to third. That brought Mantilla to the plate and he capped his
magnificent day with a line shot into the left field screen, just inside the
foul pole. The two-run homer was his third long ball of the day and put
the Red Sox on top, 5-3.
Earley kept the Senators off the scoreboard from that point on and completed his
first game of the year.
