BOSOX TRIP NATS IN WILD AFFAIR
Clubs Combine for 29 Runs, 37 Hits, 13 BBs, 7 WPs
BOSTON, July 18 (AP) - In the most prolific slugfest of the American League
season to date, the Boston Red Sox twice overcame deficits to defeat the
Washington Senators, 16-13, at Fenway Park. The Senators never gave up and
had the tying run at the plate with no one out in the ninth inning before
finally succumbing. Dick Radatz, Boston's sixth pitcher of the game,
finally nailed down the victory in a contest that lasted nearly 3 1/2 hours
despite omitting the bottom of the ninth inning. The 3 hour and 22 minute
game is the longest nine-inning contest in the major leagues thus far this year.
The victory was the seventh in a row for the Red Sox, the club's longest winning
streak of the season. In fact, it's only the second time this year that
Boston has won more than two consecutive games.
The Senators took an early 3-0 lead after an inning and a half against Red Sox
starter Earl Wilson. But Boston countered with four runs in the bottom of
the second, on a pair of two-run homers, one from Lee Thomas and the other off
the bat of Eddie Bressoud.
The Senators immediately countered with four runs in the top of the third, for a
7-4 advantage, chasing Wilson from the game. Don Lock, Mike Brumley and
Eddie Brinkman all had run-scoring extra base hits during the rally.
The Red Sox cut the three-run deficit to one with two runs of their own in the
bottom of the third on Carl Yastrzemski's solo home run and an RBI ground out
off the bat of Bressoud.
After the Senators finally failed to score in the top of the fourth, the Red Sox
tied the game on Dick Stuart's run-scoring single and drove Washington starter
Bennie Daniels from the mound. Boston took the lead, 8-7, on Frank
Malzone's home run leading off the bottom of the fifth.
The Senators regained the advantage once more with three runs off reliever Ed
Connolly in the sixth. Connolly walked the first three batters he faced,
loading the bases. Cunningham followed with a two-run single and later in
the inning Don Lock drove in a third run on a ground out. The Washington
lead was 10-8.
Yet again, the Red Sox countered immediately. Tony Conigliaro led off with
a walk and scored on Yastrzemski's triple. Stuart's grounder plated
Yastrzemski and the game was tied at 10.
Boston took the lead for good with five runs in the seventh off reliever Jim
Hannan. Bressoud singled to start off the frame and was doubled to third
by Bob Tillman. Pinch hitter Russ Nixon then tripled off the center field
wall, driving home Bressoud and Tillman for a 12-10 lead. Second baseman
Don Blasingame then kicked Felix Mantilla's grounder. The error allowed
Nixon to score and the lead was now three runs. Conigliaro and Yastrzemski
both filed out, but Stuart reached when Brinkman committed Washington's second
error of the inning. Thomas followed with a triple off the fence in front
of the right field bullpen, scoring two more runs and giving the Red Sox a 15-10
advantage.
Boston added a run in the eighth for good measure on a Hannan wild pitch.
With the Red Sox leading 16-10 entering the ninth, the game appeared comfortably
in hand. But the Senators pushed on. Facing reliever Bill Spanswick,
who had tossed a scoreless eighth, John Kennedy led off with a single and
advanced to second on a wild pitch. Brinkman then singled, with Kennedy
stopping at third. Fred Valentine kept the hit parade alive with another
single, scoring Kennedy and advancing Brinkman to second. Spanswick then
uncorked his second wild pitch of the inning, and third of the game, with the
runners each moving up a base. Blasingame's single--the fourth in a row
for Washington--plated Brinkman and left runners on first and third. The
tying run was now in the on deck circle and the Red Sox removed Spanswick and
replaced him with Dick Radatz. Radatz immediately walked Chuck Hinton,
loading the bases and bringing the tying run to the plate with no one out.
Cunningham lifted a fly to left, which scored Valentine, but kept the tying run
at the plate with one out. Jim King hit into a 3-6 fielder's choice, with
Blasingame moving to third. Radatz walked Lock, filling the bases again
and bringing the potential lead run to the plate. But Brumley lifted a
routine fly to left which Conigliaro caught, finally ending the game.
The teams combined to score 29 runs on 37 hits--both single game American League
high marks on the season. 13 walks were issued and the two pitching staffs
combined to throw seven wild pitches--three more than in any other game in the
major leagues thus far this year.
