BOND'S BIG DAY KEYS COLTS TWINBILL SWEEP
3 HRs, 9 RBIs for Houston 1B
CINCINNATI, July 14 (AP) - Walt Bond homered three times and drove in nine runs
as the Houston Colt .45's snapped a six-game losing streak with a doubleheader
sweep of the Cincinnati Reds at Crosley Field. Bond entered the twinbill
in a 6-for-38 slump but broke out in a big way against the Reds.
In the opener, both clubs benefited from solo home runs in the first
inning. Al Spangler hit a leadoff roundtripper for Houston in the top half
of the inning and Marty Keough matched him with a one-out homer in the bottom
half.
The 1-1 tie held up until the fourth when the Colts took the lead for
good. Bob Aspromonte led off the frame with a single and Eddie Kasko
followed with a walk. Johnny Bateman then came through with his fifth home
run of the season. The three-run shot put Houston on top, 4-1.
That score held up until the seventh. Houston starter Larry Yellen had
little trouble until the Reds put together a small rally. Leo Cardenas
doubled with one out and Steve Boros followed with a run-scoring single.
Yellen then retired the next two hitters to end the inning.
The Colts picked up a couple of insurance runs in the top of the ninth when
Carroll Hardy singled with two outs and Bond followed with his first home run of
the day, increasing the lead to 6-2 in the process. Hal Woodeshick closed
out the game for Houston with a pair of scoreless innings.
Bond and the Colts wasted no time seizing firm control of nightcap.
Spangler led off the game with a double off Cincinnati starter Jim Maloney and
advanced to third on Nellie Fox's fly out to left. Hardy was hit by a
pitch and Bond followed with his second home run of the day, into the right
field bleachers, to give Houston a 3-0 lead.
Houston extended its lead in the second inning. Spangler doubled again,
this time with one out, and after Fox fouled out, Hardy bounced a single through
the box, scoring Spangler. Bond then capped the scoring in this frame by
tripling off the right-center field wall, giving the Colts a 5-0 lead.
Jerry Grote's sacrifice fly scored Bob Aspromonte with Houston's sixth run in
the third and the Colt's all but ended the game with a three-run uprising in the
fourth. Hardy grounded a leadoff single to right and Bond then belted his
third home run of the day--and 16th of the year--into the right field
stands. Joe Gaines swatted a double to left and advanced to third when
Ryne Duren, who had replaced Maloney in the third, committed a balk.
Aspromonte then lifted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Gaines to give Houston
a 9-0 lead.
The Reds nicked Colts starter Ken Johnson with single runs in the sixth and
ninth, but never showed any signs of truly getting back in the game and Johnson
completed his sixth game of the year, and won for just the fourth time in 18
decisions.
