COLTS TURN TRIPLE PLAY, STILL FALL TO DODGERS
Koufax Fires CG 3-Hitter
HOUSTON, July 10 (AP) - The Houston Colt .45's became the first team this season
to turn a triple play, but still feel to the Los Angeles Dodgers, 3-1, at Colt
Stadium. Dodgers starter Sandy Koufax was dominant, allowing only three
hits in a complete game victory.
The Dodgers got to Houston starter Turk Farrell for three runs in the top of the
second inning. Ron Fairly led off the frame with his seventh home run of
the year. Johnny Roseboro followed by lacing a double to left-center
field. Frank Howard grounded out to first and Roseboro took third.
Tommy Davis then launched a Farrell breaking ball into the left field bleachers
for his eighth home run of the season and the Dodgers held a 3-0 lead.
The Colt .45's got a run back in their half of the second. Walt Bond led
off by grounding a single into center field. On the first pitch to Joe
Gaines, Koufax uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Bond to take second. Gaines
struck out, and Bob Aspromente grounded to short. But Eddie Kasko came up
with a big two-out hit, singling through the box, scoring Bond from third and
cutting the Los Angeles lead to 3-1. Johnny Bateman grounded out to end
the inning.
That was it for the scoring in the game. After Kasko's single, Koufax
retired the next six batters he faced prior to yielding a two-out single to
Gaines in the fourth. The next seven hitters went down in order before
Bond led off the seventh by reaching on an error on Fairly. Koufax then
retired the last nine batters in order.
The triple play came in the fourth inning. Roseboro led off by grounding a
single to center field. Frank Howard followed with a single to right,
leaving runners at first and second and none out. That brought Tommy Davis
to the plate. With the count at 1-2, Davis lined to second baseman Nellie
Fox, who was shading Davis up the middle. Fox stepped on second base,
doubling up Roseboro and threw to Bond at first base to complete the triple
play.
