BRAVES SNAP 8-GAME LOSING STREAK
Aaron's 3 hits, Cloninger's CG Pace 'W' Over Bucs
PITTSBURGH, July 10 (AP) - Milwaukee's losing streak came to an end at eight
with a 4-2 victory over Pittsburgh on a rainy evening at Forbes Field. The
Braves overcame an early 2-0 deficit behind Tony Cloninger's complete game
four-hitter and Henry Aaron's three hits, including a pair of doubles, two runs
scored and two runs batted in.
Cloninger (11-5) surrendered solo home runs to Willie Stargell and Bob Bailey in
the second and third innings respectively to put the Braves in a 2-0 hole.
But Milwaukee began to chip away at the deficit with two outs in the fourth
inning. Aaron ripped a double to left-center field and scored when Lee
Maye slashed a two-bagger into the left field corner.
After a scoreless fifth, the Braves took the lead in the top of the sixth.
Again it began with two outs and again Aaron and Maye played critical
roles. Denis Menke started the rally with a single to center. Aaron
then hammered a double over Willie Stargell's head and off the left field
wall. Menke scored all the way from first, beating the relay throw from
shortstop Gene Alley. When Maye doubled into the right-center field gap,
Aaron scored to give Milwaukee a 3-2 advantage and chased Pirates starter Bob
Friend from the mound. Bob Priddy came on in relief and retired Joe Torre
on a grounder to second to end the inning.
A brief rain delay interrupted the bottom of the sixth inning, but Cloninger
returned after the tarp was removed from the field and completed a 1-2-3 inning.
Milwaukee pushed across a much appreciated insurance run in the eighth.
With one out, Eddie Mathews doubled past third baseman Bailey. Menke lined
to Stargell in left for the second out, but Aaron came through yet again,
grounding a single through the box into center field, scoring Mathews to put the
Braves ahead 4-2. The Braves right fielder had been slumping recently,
managing only two hits in 21 at bats from June 28 through July 2. But in
the five games since he's 12-for-24 with three doubles, a home run and six runs
scored. In the two games in this series, Aaron is 7-for-10 with three
doubles, a home run, five runs scored and three driven in.
The Pirates attempted to rally with two outs in the ninth. Roberto
Clemente singled to center and, after a long battle, Stargell drew a walk,
bringing the potential winning run to the plate in the form of Donn Clendenon.
Clendenon picked out a 2-1 fastball from Cloninger and hit it hard, but right to
Denis Menke, on a line, for the final out of the game.
