BOSOX PITCHERS WALK 18 IN 8 INNINGS
Tigers Rout Boston in DH Nightcap
DETROIT, July 10 (AP) - Red Sox pitchers issued a combined 18 walks in just
eight innings as Boston fell, hard, to Detroit 13-3 in the second game of a
doubleheader at Tiger Stadium. The Red Sox did salvage the opener,
4-3.
The 18 walks by one team shattered the previous major league high of 12 this
season, set on April 30 by the Athletics in a 13-4 loss to the Tigers. No
other team has walked more than ten in a single game. Not only did the Red
Sox increase the previous high total by 50%, as the trailing road team they
managed to issue the 18 free passes in just eight innings of work.
The Tigers took the lead in the very first inning and never looked back.
Dick McAulliffe's three-run homer in the first inning--his 18th longball of the
year--followed (what else) walks to Gates Brown and Norm Cash issued by Boston
starter Dave Morehead (3-8). Morehead went on to issue six walks in 3 1/3
innings before being lifted in the fourth inning trailing 6-1. His
replacement, Bill Spanswick surrendered three more free passes in a mere 1 2/3
innings, along with four more runs.
Dave Gray was the third pitcher for the Red Sox and he walked three more batters
in a single inning, and surrendered three runs as well. The final Boston
hurler, Ed Connolly, allowed only one run in two innings without being touched
for a hit but did walk six more batters, including Jerry Lumpe with the bases
loaded for Detroit's 13th and final run.
Tigers starter Ed Rakow (9-2) was the beneficiary of all of Boston's largesse,
and won his 9th game of the year.
The Red Sox have walked more batters (308) and allowed more runs (433) than any
other team in either league.
