BENGALS EARN SWEEP WITH PAIR OF 11-INNNING WINS
McLain Tosses CG Shutout in Opener
DETROIT, July 5 (AP) - The Detroit Tigers entered the All-Star break with a
doubleheader sweep of the Washington Senators, extending their winning streak to
six in the process. The Senators hit the break on an eight-game losing
streak and have now dropped into sole possession of the American League
cellar.
Both games were one-run Detroit victories, and the Tigers now hold a league-best
one-run record of 17-8.
In the opener both starting pitchers took shutouts into the 11th inning.
Denny McLain appeared to be out of gas when he fanned Mike Brumley to end the
top of the 11th with the potential go-ahead run on first base. When Bubba
Phillips led off the bottom of the frame with a home run on a 2-1 offering from
Buster Narum, McLain became only the second pitcher this year to record a
complete game victory of at least 11 innings. Jim Bouton of the Yankees
fired a 12-inning complete game shutout over the Angels at Yankee Stadium on May
24.
The loss was a bitter one for Narum (2-11), who has been having a terrible
season. But he was brilliant on this afternoon. Narum surrendered a
double to Billy Bruton leading off the game and then held the Tigers hitless
until Phillips' dramatics ended things.
The nightcap was a wild affair in its own right. The Tigers scored single
runs in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. Detroit starter
Dick Sparma helped his own cause with a run-scoring triple in the second,
driving home batterymate Bill Freehan who had led off the inning with a
single. Gates Brown led off the third with a single, then stole second and
advanced to third on Don Leppert's throwing error. One out later, Brown
scored on Jerry Lumpe's ground out.
The Senators chopped the lead in half in the fourth on Moose Skowron's solo home
run--his 11th of the season.
The Tigers appeared to seize firm control of the contest in the sixth when they
scored three times. Norm Cash led off the inning with his 15th home run of
the season to increase Detroit's lead to 3-1. Lumpe followed with a single
and Freehan clubbed an Alan Koch fastball into the lower grandstand in left
field for a two-run homer and a 5-1 advantage.
That scored held up into the ninth inning. Tigers reliever Hank Aguirre
retired Don Lock on strikes and pinch hitter Fred Valentine on a foul pop to
third, but surrendered a single to pinch hitter John Kennedy and issued a free
pass to Brumley, who was also serving as a pinch hitter. Phil Regan was
summoned from the bullpen to end the game, but Don Zimmer grounded a single into
left field to fill the bases with two outs. Don Blasingame drew a walk to
force in a run and brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the form of Jim King
who proved the value of doing so by depositing a Regan sinker into the right
field seats, just inside the foul pole, for a grand slam. The Senators now
led for the first time all day, 6-5.
Steve Ridzik was brought into close the game out, but immediately yielded a
game-tying home run to Dick McAulliffe to start the bottom of the ninth.
With the game tied at six, neither team scored again until the bottom of the
11th. McAulliffe grounded to third to open the inning, but Brown reached
when Ridzik botched his little roller to the mound. Cash drew a walk
leaving runners at first and second. Lumpe followed by bouncing a single
through the middle, easily scoring Brown and bringing the doubleheader sweep to
fruition.
Detroit enters the break in third place, 3 1/2 games out of first.
