MARIS' 5 HITS, 2 HRS PUSH YANKS PAST A'S
RF Caps Day with GW HR in 10th

NEW YORK, July 2 (AP) - Roger Maris rapped out five hits--two of them home runs, including the game-winner in the bottom of the tenth inning--to lead New York past the Kansas City Athletics, 5-4 at Yankee Stadium.  Maris has hit five home runs in the past week, including a pair of two-home run games.  The victory stretched the Yankees' winning streak to four.

New York took a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning off Kansas City starter Diego Segui.  Bobby Richardson drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on Mickey Mantle's single.  Both runners came home when Maris hit his first home run of the game, depositing a Segui offering into the lower grandstand in right field.

The A's recovered quickly, however, picking up a run in the third when Rick Joseph doubled and later scored on Wayne Causey's sacrifice fly.  Kansas City tied the game in the fourth on a pair of unearned runs.  With one out, Rocky Colavito reached when third baseman Phil Linz kicked a ground ball for an error.  Billy Bryan drew a walk from Yankees starter Rollie Sheldon and George Alusik doubled Colavito home, to cut the deficit to 3-2, with Bryan moving to third.  Ed Charles grounded out to second, scoring Bryan and tying the game.

New York regained the lead in the bottom half of the fourth.  Maris and Joe Pepitone opened the inning with back-to-back singles, putting runners at first and second.  Hector Lopez flied out to right but Elston Howard's single plated Maris, giving the Yankees a 4-3 advantage.

Neither team had a scoring opportunity again until the top of the ninth when the A's tied the game.  Sheldon yielded a lead off single to Colavito and walked Bryan, bringing manager Yogi Berra to the mound for a pitching change.  Hal Reniff replaced Sheldon and retired Alusik on a line drive to Linz at third.  Charles then roped a double past Linz into the left field corner, scoring Colavito to tie the game and leaving runners at second and third with just one out.  With the infield in to cut off the possible go-ahead run, pinch hitter Jose Tartabull rolled a grounder to Richardson at second.  Kansas City had the contact play on and Richardson easily cut down Bryan at the plate.  With runners at first and third and two outs, Reniff struck out pinch hitter Dick Green to end the inning.

The game moved to the bottom of the tenth, still tied.  Working his second inning of relief, right-hander Wes Stock fanned Tom Tresh to start the frame, before working a 2-2 count to Maris.  Stock fired a sinker but left it up and Maris belted it into the right field bleachers for his second home run of the game and a Yankees victory.
